Reporting to the Vice President, Legal Affairs and Assistant General Counsel, the Litigation Paralegal is responsible for litigation management and communication regarding potential or pending actions with all site personnel, outside counsel and witnesses.
Litigation Management & Support Responsibilities
• Assist in the retention of outside counsel and vendors.
• Maintain regular communication with outside counsel, the Company’s employees and witnesses, expert witnesses.
• Liaison between the Company’s Law Department, employees/witnesses and outside counsel.
• Assistance regarding the issuance of a legal hold.
• Prepare for, organize, coordinate, manage document collection from Company witnesses. Record in Legal Hold Management System.
• Investigate employee/ claimant / retiree / product / manufacturing site or accident scene; gather important facts (sales histories, employee history, personnel file).
• Participate in drafting, investigation and responding to discovery requests.
• Assist in preparation of Company employees, witnesses and retirees for deposition; attend deposition and summarize testimony.
• Organization and facilitation of interviews, teleconferences, meetings with outside counsel, Company employees, retirees and expert witnesses.
• Prepare for and attend mediation.
• Prepare for and attend mock trial, hearings, trial.
• Review third-party subpoenas, investigate and provide responses.
General Litigation Responsibilities
• Accept service of process; provide documents to the VP and/or other Law Department attorneys and paralegals.
• Maintain litigation data for VP’s meeting with audit and general counsel.
o Add dismissed and settled cases.
o Add recoveries from class action settlements.
o Provide annual data of number of cases filed, dismissed or settled.
• Liaison between Director of Enterprise Risk & Insurance and USF&G account executive
o Review of and record USF&G analysis re: participation in defense costs.
o Review and assistance for USF&G’s determination of percentage of liability payment.
• Provide guidance on records retention issues and legal holds.
• Provide necessary litigation data to Director of Enterprise Risk & Insurance for policy renewals or inquiries.
• Investigate, discuss and provide necessary claim/purchasing information to third-party vendor for class action settlements
• Review Personnel Organization Management notifications re: employee resignations, terminations or retirements to collect documents responsive to a legal hold.
