This is an exempt level position.

Position Summary:

The Cell Engineering group is recruiting an experienced yeast strain engineer to join the Design Biology team. The successful candidate will be responsible for the high-throughput (HTP) development of ADM’s acidophilic yeast cell factory. Specifically, this scientist will be using robotic platforms to reprogram yeast metabolism for the bioproduction of lactic acid and bio-acrylic acid. This is an impactful role within the Sustainable Materials team and individuals trained in synthetic biology and experienced in HTP methods are encouraged to apply.


Job Responsibilities:
 

  • Design and build combinatorial genetic parts & devices for expression in yeast cells
  • Perform HTP yeast transformations and confirm the genotype of engineered strains using a fully automated platform
  • Improve and innovate strain engineering methods to accelerate DBTL cycles
  • Evaluate and interpret strain KPI data to identify genetic engineering targets
  • Design and execute molecular biology methods (e.g. molecular cloning, PCR, reporter assays) in 96 well plate format
  • Operate lab equipment, including state-of-the-art robotic platforms
  • Use commercial software and cloud-based LIMS for DNA design and data tracking
  • Maintain detailed notes in an ELN, process and interpret experimental data, and communicate results
  • Contribute to a team-oriented, positive, safe and inclusive work environment

Job Requirements:

These skills and experiences will be required or useful for the candidate:

 

  • Ph.D. or Master’s in biotechnology, molecular biology (or related field) with industry experience
  • A track record of using automation and HTP methods for strain engineering
  • Experience in yeast genetics and biotechnology (engineering yeast extremophiles a plus)
  • High proficiency with HTP DNA cloning methods and data interpretation
  • Understanding of bio-based production and key performance indicators (KPIs)
  • Demonstrated success working within inter-disciplinary teams
  • Ability to generate, organize, analyze and interpret large sample sizes and datasets
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills with both technical and non-technical personnel
