Job Description

Summary

We're looking for someone to join our dedicated portfolio team in delivering outstanding experiences consistently, brilliantly, and memorably.

This role has two key elements: providing leadership to the portfolio team to ensure that the volunteer experiences we offer are consistently positive, meaningful and expertly managed throughout their journey. You'll nurture and create outstanding volunteer roles and opportunities that are rooted in our unique places and stories, and that begins in our local communities. You’ll quickly work out what makes our places tick and just how much potential this portfolio has for building and sharing connections to history, nature and each other. Secondly, you’ll inspire our staff and volunteers with enthusiasm, dynamism, inclusivity and collaboration, making sure we are embedded in our local communities. You’ll keep us connected, seeking collaboration and partnership opportunities, and you’ll find new ways to involve more people.

What it's like to work here

Join a team who are passionate about Birmingham’s complex tapestry of stories, woven into the landscape – into the city’s brickwork, its streets and canals, and its green spaces. We share the experiences – sometimes ordinary, often extraordinary – of the working people who called this place home. Our visitors are enriched by these experiences, whether they are learning about life in the last of the city’s 30,000 back-to-back courts, delving into our city’s history by foot, bike or boat at Roundhouse Birmingham, or discovering the natural beauty and diversity of the Clent Hills and our city’s green spaces. We champion each other’s wellbeing and we'll make sure you are connected to the National Trust’s network of support, along with personal and professional development opportunities. We have an excellent Employee Assistance Programme and a generous pension scheme.

We're providing a chance to come and meet some of the team on Wednesday 23rd February, find out about what we do, and ask any questions you have about the role. If you'd like to join us, please click the link to book your space.

What you'll be doing

You’ll be responsible for leading on volunteering involvement on and off our properties, and for creating a welcoming, outward-facing network within our local communities, to better connect our stories with theirs, and our opportunities to their skills and desires.

Striving for mutual benefit, you’ll make sure that our volunteers are engaged, supported and rewarded as they move through their journey with us, whether it’s just for a day or for years to come.

You’ll lead on connectivity, recruitment and quality of volunteering experience across our places, and you’ll support our property teams to be the best volunteer managers they can be.

You’ll aim to work with and for young people on some of our projects; creating great experiences, maximising the opportunities and overcoming the challenges that exist in the current climate.

Inclusion is at the heart of our plans, and you’ll work with our teams on crafting meaningful experiences through programming, seeking community connections along the way.

Who we're looking for

We'd love to hear from you have the following skills and experience:

  • Passionate about Birmingham and its people
  • Well networked into the communities and cultural fabric of the city
  • Experience leading volunteers and creating great volunteer-powered opportunities
  • Great communication skills, written and verbal
  • Experience managing change

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
