Job Description

Summary

We’re looking for a Volunteering & Community Manager to join our team here at the National Trust North Devon. We are committed to making our places welcoming to everyone and we want to find the right person to help us build our work with different communities to realise this vision.

What it's like to work here

Devon is a county of contrasts - from surfing beaches and spectacular cliffs on the north coast to the mellow south Devon countryside, with the wilds of Dartmoor - our North Devon portfolio has it all! With inspiring valleys, sandy beaches, towering cliffs, woodlands and moorland, North Devon was a favourite landscape of the Romantic Poets. It provides all visitors with a huge opportunity to enjoy the outdoors with walks of all shapes and sizes and if you love the outdoors, you’ll love being part of our team who promote our cause and the importance of preserving these special places for our future generations.

What you'll be doing

The North Devon portfolio is an incredible place, with a key focus on nature recovery and delivering excellent experiences. It includes buildings, 60 miles of coastline and 11,000 acres of countryside, Arlington Court and the National Trust Carriage Museum, moorland, food and beverage outlets and more. The staff are supported by teams of fantastic volunteers, across a range of different roles. There is now a need for someone to set the vision across the entire portfolio, join the dots between different sites and departments, help to achieve a consistency in our offer and develop new opportunities.

Your ability to influence and delivery style will nurture the confidence and capability of our leaders and line managers as they develop their own volunteer management capability, ensuring we offer an outstanding volunteer experience.

You will be a credible and enthusiastic ambassador for the National Trust, developing relationships with new stakeholders and in the community, whilst nurturing existing relationships. You won’t be afraid to look at things differently and will explore and help to trial innovative ways of volunteering. The portfolio has ambitious plans and you will be a key part of helping to make these happen.

This is a friendly, dynamic and passionate team to be a part of and a wonderful place to work. As a new role for the portfolio, it is initially offered for a 24-month duration and will then be reviewed.

Who we're looking for

Please see the role profile attached. More specifically across the North Devon portfolio, this role will:

  • be a key and credible member of the Portfolio Leadership Team.
  • support our Inclusion and Everyone Welcome ambition.
  • work with the Portfolio Leadership Team to review, develop and deliver our Volunteering and Community ambition.
  • coach our line managers to continuously improve their confidence and capability in managing volunteers.
  • work across the portfolio.
  • support recruitment of new volunteers and recognition of existing ones.
  • have a strong people focus, enabling, empowering and encouraging colleagues across the properties.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
