Job Description

Avery Dennison is seeking a Vision & Automation Engineer at our Fairport Harbor location that is a highly motivated individual contributor with a drive to learn and develop a system that will detect and contain known quality defects.  In this role, the successful candidate will work independently with minimal direction to navigate the system software and create recipes connecting the system to material.  Although independent, this role will also work  very closely with the site quality team, operations and engineering ensuring clear communication and execution of recipes to drive both quality improvement and productivity.  

Activities may include, but are not limited to:

  • Overall upkeep of the vision system and day to day operation 

  • Development of recipes specific to item type 

  • Building defect classification libraries 

  • Fine tuning recipes based on sensitivity to create alarm vs. allowable standards

  • Streamlining the recipe process by bundling criteria 

  • Working jointly with IT to resolve any software issues 

  • Leading external discussions with the OEM to troubleshoot, improve or maintain the vision system 

  • Communication, documentation and roll out of expectations for the operations teams once recipes are developed 

  • Education and interpretation of the vision system functionality to support staff and operators

  • Reading and interpreting OEM manuals to create logic required for defect detection and recipe development 

  • Supporting/leading controls projects on automated packaging line which ties to vision system

  • Perform other tasks or project work as assigned

  • Practice all health and safety procedures, policies and practices, participate in required training and initiatives 

  • Practice excellent housekeeping. Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Technical field such as Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or equivalent from an accredited university

  • 2 years industry experience

  • Good trouble-shooting/problem-solving and mechanical ability

  • Achieves goals with minimal direction and actively seeks knowledge with a keen attention to detail 

  • Demonstrated decision making and problem-solving experience

  • Must be able to actively contribute in a team based environment

  • Must have schedule flexibility for occasionally staying over or coming in early

  • Proficient in Google Suite and Microsoft Office 

  • Comfortable interpreting computer programming syntax 

  • Self-directed, self-starter

Preferred:

  • Proficiency in AutoCAD

  • Ability to understand and troubleshoot PLC ladder logic and make system edits as needed

  • HMI software; Factory Talk Studio, RSView 32

  • Data collection systems including Wonderware Historian

  • PLCs: Allen Bradley ControlLogix 

  • Knowledge in automation, drive and control systems

  • Knowledge of Safety PLC and associated hardware

  • Knowledgeable with National Electric Code

  • Operations experience within Avery Dennison
