Reporting to the Executive Vice President, Corporate Affairs, this role is responsible for integrated communications to support BMS’ global ESG, D&I and health equity objectives. This position will need to manage across enterprise and organizational lines to build a comprehensive reporting process, coordinate strategy, garner consensus, and ensure alignment of disclosure, messaging and advocacy.
As part of the Corporate Affairs Leadership team, this individual will drive development of enterprise CSR strategies, build CSR campaigns and oversee initiatives and partnerships to support the organization’s commitment to advancing health for people of all backgrounds and communities and elevate corporate reputation.
The role requires an individual with proven experience in global purpose-driven programs and communications and a passion for upholding BMS’ mission.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead all internal and external CSR communications, reporting and storytelling on a full spectrum of CSR and ESG issues from sustainability and social justice to product safety, responsible content, and diversity, equity and inclusion.
- Develop and execute a long-term communications strategy to elevate and maintain BMS’ corporate reputation while anticipating and mitigating conflict.
- Develop health equity programs and platforms and help implement with matrix team.
- Act as a thought leader in ESG; understand current and future challenges within the industry and educating and prioritizing these issues with internal teams and external stakeholders.
- Continuously research and evaluate evolving ESG trends and legislation, with a global perspective; stay informed regarding emerging issues and best practices; identify opportunities for collaboration and assist with development of policy recommendations.
- Serve as primary spokesperson for CSR initiatives to internal and external audiences.
- Develop an in-depth understanding of BMS’ programs relating to ESG and comparison to its peers.
- Identify, coordinate, and respond to any third-party surveys related to ESG and other reporting.
- Create and drive engagement opportunities that serve employees, suppliers, patients and partners while aligning with BMS’ mission and vision.
- Support issues management and crisis communications and preparedness by providing advice and counsel on corporate and brand reputation as related to the full spectrum of CSR and ESG issues.
- Identify and work with external stakeholders (NGOs, governments, charities, etc.) to pursue and promote BMS’ bold commitments to help address disparities in healthcare, increase diversity in clinical trials, expand the supply chain to include more diverse suppliers, enhance our employees’ ability to give back to the community and increase the diversity of our own workforce.
- Create dashboards and reporting to track performance for various audiences (employees, Executives & Board level).
- Reinforce BMS commitments in diversity, inclusion and health equity through external and internal communications.
- Manage BMS corporate giving budgets, by ensuring all investments are aligned to core business values of the company and incorporating clear and transparent policies and procedures for CSR support criteria.
- Drive employee engagement and communications, in partnership with Corporate Affairs Leadership Team, to reinforce D&I, health equity and CSR initiatives to current employees for the purpose of increasing philanthropic giving, community outreach and volunteerism.
- Partner with cross-functional internal teams (e.g. HR, Legal) of risk and compliance managers to ensure policies and best practices are in place to minimize risk to the public.
- Drive company and leadership participation in events and board membership to demonstrate the company’s commitment to social responsibility.
- Implement and maintain a robust measurement program, including media and social media measurement, and generate quarterly reports for the business in alignment with stated business goals for CSR, health equity and DEI.
- Lead development of a purpose/CSR annual report and make available on our public website.
- Ensure CSR activities are conducted on a national level and are represented appropriately across all regions.
- Serve as leader on Corporate Affairs leadership team ensuring collaboration and enterprise thinking among all Corporate Affairs leadership functions.
Qualifications and Experience
- As a trusted advisor to business partners and executive management, this role requires seasoned judgment, strategic focus and objective perspective. The successful candidate will possess the ability to see the entire landscape – the company, financial markets, investment community and wider community, as well the capacity and network to navigate regulatory, competitive, reputational, and political dynamics.
- 15+ years public relations and communications experience required, experience in pharmaceutical industry is a plus.
- Deep understanding of and experience in ESG communication strategy and campaigns; familiarity with frameworks such as SDG’s, reporting standards such as SASB or GRI, and ratings agencies such as MSCI and ISS.
- Possess an established network of ESG/CSR colleagues from whom you can seek advice.
- Expertise developing corporate communications plans aligning internal, external and stakeholder communications against business priorities.
- Experience building integrated marketing communications programs, and driving outcomes across traditional media, digital and social channels.
- Proven ability to work within teams to develop successful multi-faceted communications programs that reach across teams, functions and geographies with demonstrated experience in pharmaceutical industry as a plus. 
- Strong understanding of how to use data and research to drive planning. 
- Outstanding media relations skills and relationships, with experience engaging reporters on a regular basis.
- Capable and experienced in providing communications counsel to senior management.
- Able to communicate information effectively and accurately, verbally or in writing, across multiple disciplines. Can synthesize large amounts of data and distill key points clearly, succinctly and quickly.
- Proven ability to think ahead, engage proactively and take initiative.
- Able to achieve results and to operate within a complex, fast-paced and changing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree required.
