Job Description:
The Veterinarian under the supervision of the Agro-coordinator, will ensure the effective and principled implementation of livestock protection response (provision of feed, deworming campaign and delivering trainings to pastoralists) in Maydan Wardak province of Afghanistan. They will be based in Saydabad district with frequent travel to the districts and villages in the provinces, with occasional travel to Kabul office.
The veterinary staff will be the point of contact for paravets, provide refresher trainings to them (especially on de-worming techniques and livestock health), support and coordinate de-worming campaign and make sure planned targets are achieved. At the same time, the veterinarians will provide necessary trainings to the farmers to improve livestock management, feeding and sanitation. They will be communicating will relevant community stakeholders and pastoralists to understand the current challenges local herds face, what is their health status and what current disease outbreak are endangering them.
They will also be supporting the project team and make sure that the storage and distribution of livestock packages meet core standards common to livestock interventions (LEGS, national regulations and MAIL recommendations, FAO guidelines on livestock relate interventions) and ensuring that adequate technical requirements of the engaged staff are in place and standardized, ensuring that necessary hygiene and sanitary practices are in place during the distributions and de-worming campaigns (as well during the transportation and storage of animal feed).

Responsibilities:
The veterinarian is responsible for, but not limited to, the following work areas and duties: * Planning, coordination and management
- Design and develop an implementation plan for the program intervention in livestock sector (especially deworming campaigns and training), weekly and monthly work plans, including detailed training plans;
- provides technical assistance in the veterinary and livestock extension field for the members of community;
- Participate in PIN induction to inform quality project delivery in line with CHS and PIN Code of Conduct;
- Ensure full understanding of PIN Community Feedback and Response Mechanism (CFRM) and ensure effective and appropriate roll out across the project;
- Ensure the project team and operations comply with recommended Covid-19 precaution protocols;
- Coordination of de-worming campaign
- Design a training plan, arrange and conduct training for paravets especially on de-worming practices and animal health;
- Support paravets in planning and executing de-worming campaigns (communication with community representatives, arranging de/worming campaigns in the villages, keeping records of supported beneficiaries), keeping records of used items;
- Regular monitoring of paravets' performance, and ensuring that records of provided medicine as well as supported beneficiaries are being kept.
- Keep good coordination with DAIL district agriculture and livestock extension officers;
- Delivery of trainings on
- together with Agro-coordinator work on the finalization of the trainings' curriculum, methodology and training materials;
- keeping track of the training records - attendance sheets, score tests/results;
- preparation of the trainings - stationery, necessary material, venue, contacting beneficiaries, arranging transportation for PIN staff;
- delivering technical trainings on animal health, feeding practices and drought mitigation measures (essential feeding regimes incorporating the provided fodder, application of additional feed, grazing management including drought mitigation techniques, animal health measures and basic veterinary practices Disaster Risk Reduction technique;
- Quality Control
- Monitors of the projects progress and contribute to project quality;
- Provide information about the current effect and impact of drought on livestock in the area of implementation;
- Engage paravets to collect data between the first and second training and after second training, to monitor directly the livestock performance (application of feed, health status, weight loss) and also to further monitor any additional capacity building necessary for the farming households;
- Support of project activities
- Coordinate with logistics department proper storage and distribution of de-worming medicine, straw and concentrated animal feed;
- Supporting logistics department with the procurement and distribution of paravet kits;
- QUALIFICATIONS AND PREFERRED SKILLSEssential requirements
- (Preferred) Bachelor's degree in Agriculture/ horticulture or Livestock, Rural Development or equivalent; (Minimum required) Higher Secondary School Completion Certificate;
- At least 4 years of experience in planning, organizing and providing trainings in the agricultural sector, rural development, or agriculture innovation;
- Experience with community mobilization in a rural and/or insecure context, including marginalized populations, especially women, in community activities;
- Knowledge of veterinary standards and requirements of local institutions (MAIL, MRRD, etc.)
- More than 2-year experience in working with the communities in the targeted province (based on the advertisement);
- Working knowledge of Dari and PashtoRequired competencies:
- Excellent communication, facilitation, social and presentation skills with ability to interact effectively and harmoniously;
- Ability to work as part of a team;
- Computer skills and English knowledge is an asset;
