Job Description

Shape better communities as a trading standard enforcement officer

As a trading standard enforcement officer for Regional Enterprise Ltd (Re), a joint venture between Capita and London Borough of Barnet, you’ll define and enforce the systems and policies that will ensure all businesses and premises in the borough meet the highest standards. With a strong working knowledge of consumer law and the ability to carry out investigations fully and efficiently, you’ll help make daily life better for Barnet residents. We’re at an exciting stage of our transformation at Re, working to deliver high quality services for our public and private sector customers, and are looking for others to join us on this journey as we continue to evolve and improve.

As part of our team, you’ll not only play a key role in making decisions, you’ll also have the opportunity to build close connections with influential stakeholders across the industry, local government and communities. You’ll be influential in helping others in the team to grow their knowledge, and in return, we’ll give you access to structured training and resources to give you everything you need to develop in your career. We’re focussed on finding the right person for this role, so we don’t mind where you’re located, as long as you’re able to travel into Barnet to attend on-site and client meetings when needed for various projects. Apply now and you’ll have a hugely positive impact on the Barnet community now and into the future.

What you’ll be doing:

  • enforcing appropriate legislation (food, pest, housing) and advising businesses on compliance standards through site visits

  • contributing to and leading special projects and investigations as directed by the group manager

  • undertaking inspections and searches of relevant premises, either by prior arrangement or unannounced, as required including weights and measures inspections

  • responding to and investigating reports and complaints received under relevant criminal and civil law

  • attending and contributing to meetings, lectures, seminars and other training and development courses

  • mentoring and supporting the development of new or junior staff.

What we’re looking for:

  • experience conducting sound regulatory and enforcement practice

  • excellent understanding and an up to date knowledge of Trading Standards legislation as well as key international, national, regional and local policy developments

  • a full clean current driving licence, and access to a vehicle

  • excellent administrative practice and experience of governance requirements

  • experience of working with a range of partners and organisations

  • a diploma or equivalent in Trading Standards is desirable.

All interviews, assessments and background checks will continue to take place online, to completely remove the need for face-to-face contact. All Capita colleagues who can work from home should do so; and where it is not possible for colleagues to work remotely, we have taken important steps to protect those working from Capita’s offices. Social distancing, enhanced hygiene and safety measures are already in place at all Capita locations that are open to protect our colleagues and manage the risk of COVID-19. The welfare of our people is of paramount importance to us, and we’re doing everything we can to keep our colleagues and customers safe during this time.

We’re an equal opportunity employer, which means we’ll consider all suitably qualified applicants regardless of gender identity or expression, ethnic origin, nationality, religion or beliefs, age, sexual orientation, disability status or any other protected characteristic. We recruit and develop our people based on merit and their passion for creating better outcomes, and we’re committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees.
