Job purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for â€œdynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Sr. Test Development Engineer.  The Sr. Test Development Engineer will be responsible for to support the preparation of test equipment, software, and hardware instrumentation to integrate units under test for development, validation, and durability testing.  The Sr. Test Development Engineer will develop and specify new eMotor dynamometer test applications and will also be the technical liaison for various organizational units that support BorgWarner eDM applications. Is also responsible for reviewing progress of projects, evaluating results, and making changes where necessary in the development of BorgWarner products.  

Key responsibilities

  • Support preparation of test equipment, software, and hardware instrumentation.
  • Support preparation of test set-ups and Units under test
  • Develop and execute first-time capable tests for calibration and hardware development using AVL PUMA
  • Overall System Integration - keep all complicated systems working together, multiple CAN lines, Models, PUMA programming, Inverter Integration, coolant skid to PUMA.
  • Perform inverter integration, debug, test, calibration, and validation on motor emulator and dynamometer
  • Support Development of specialized tests and specifying required new test equipment
  • Support installation of new test equipment and lab maintenance/upgrades
  • Analyze and review test results with Functional Test and Motor Controls team for data integrity/accuracy
  • Continuously look for opportunities to improve laboratory testing capabilities, planning facility hardware updates, expand automating testing processes, and keeping current with available industry technology, while supporting the safety and quality initiatives.
  • Interact with facilities engineering on issues and future planning
  • Execute procurement of test equipment/software/consumables
  • Work with automotive power electronics including high voltage inverters, battery emulators, DC/DC converters.
  • Define and support product evaluation and validation activities, including leading and overseeing check out and debug of new hardware & software in a lab environment using bench instrumentation and tools
  • Lead/Advise/Strategize the development of new BorgWarner eDM motor configurations and motor technologies from a drive and advanced development standpoint
  • Coordinate the creation of material requisitions for part orders, the assembly and debugging of system and software, systems installation, and initial operator training to ensure effective implementation
  • Work with other engineering competencies, suppliers, and partners to ensure proper development, execution and verification of system products
  • Determines best techniques/procedure and applies for analysis, design, or experimental procedures
  • Mentors the less experienced engineers & technicians; role model for BW Beliefs
  • Participate in troubleshooting issues with different teams to drive towards root cause identification and resolution

What we’re looking for

  • BS or MS in Engineering Discipline Required
  • Minimum 8 years engineering experience preferred
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience required
  • Experience in Engine or eMotor Dynamometer Testing methods and equipment is required
  • Experience with AVL PUMA/CAMEO
  • Experience with eMotor/Inverter calibration and development tools (CANape, INCA)
  • Technical knowledge as demonstrated by academic experience and broad practical experience in eMotor development is preferred
  • Core fundamentals of electric machine theory and design:  permanent magnet and induction
  • Extensive experience in troubleshooting and problem solving relating to power electronics and dynamometers
  • Understanding of vehicle communications software and functions that interface with inverter and electric motor systems: CAN, CAN open, FlexRay
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills in English required
  • Strong knowledge base of engineering theories related to rotating electric engineering function and applies those theories to a variety of complex tasks and situations
  • Needs to have strong problem-solving skills, multi-tasking abilities, attention to detail, leadership attributes and self-starter attitude
  • Must routinely work in a hands-on manner
  • Ability to work proactively with minimal supervision required
  • Works well in a team environment required
  • Must be highly aware and adhere to high voltage safety standards and procedures
