As a Tax Accountant on the U.S. Payroll and Expatriate Tax (internally titled Consultant – Compensation Tax) on our Global Tax team, you will assist in the accounting, expatriate taxation and payroll functions. This position reports directly to the Tax Manager on the Global Tax - Compensation Tax team. 

On the U.S. Payroll Tax side, you will be responsible for importing daily payroll tax payments for nearly 30 legal entity payrolls to federal, state, and local tax authorities are reviewed for accuracy.  You will also be responsible for the preparation of all monthly, quarterly, and annual federal, state, and local 940 and 941 tax returns, other required government reporting and drafting response to all tax authority notices and audits.  We support the accounting with payroll tax accruals, supporting tax detail for closing and reconciliations.  Our business partners include U.S. Payroll Operations (part of the HR organization at Caterpillar), Compensation & Benefits, Executive Compensation, eTrade, Legal, Treasury, Accounting, our global Legal Entity/Business Unit accounting teams, HR, and functional operational teams. 

On the Expatriate Tax side, we globally manage expatriate tax compliance process to ensure all home/host tax returns are filed timely and our employees are tax equalized to home country tax standard in accordance with company policy.  You will be assisting in coordinating expatriate tax filings, tax payments, tax equalization settlements with the appropriate global business partners for approximately 1,500 current and repatriated expatriates.  You would perform first review of U.S. federal/state tax authority notices and work with the Manager to respond to the tax notices. We support the accounting with tax accruals, supporting tax detail for closing and reconciliations.  Our business partners on the expatriate tax time include Ernst & Young, Cartus, Global Payrolls, Global Mobility team (part of the HR organization), eTrade and our global Legal Entity/Business Unit accounting teams. 

As part of the Global Tax team, you will have the opportunity to expand your payroll tax and expatriate tax experience.

Your job duties and responsibilities may include but are not limited to:

  • Payroll Tax Compliance Management & Review: Prepares U.S. Federal/state/local 940/941tax returns.   
  • Reviews daily tax payments.  Drafts notices and audit responses. 
  • Assist the Manager to support the U.S. Federal/state Reporting & Analysis team (1120 team) with compensation/payroll related information including Schedule M for Executive Officer Aircraft, Executive Compensation 162(m) and payroll apportionment for state tax allocation.   
  • Expatriate Tax Compliance Management & Review: 
  • Support the Manager in globally coordinating compliance process in nearly 50 host countries to ensure timely compliance. 
  • Understand U.S. Form 1040 enough to answer employee questions on tax return and tax equalization.

Tax Planning Support & Special Projects: 

  • Analyses and opines on proposed changes to U.S. tax legislations and regulations with regard to the impact on compensation compliance requirements or calculations, requiring in-depth experience, knowledge and judgment.
  • Participates on teams within or outside of the U.S. on tax and business initiatives.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master’s level degree related to Accounting
  • 1-3 years of tax related experience at Big 4 public accounting firm and/or large multinational corporation

Desired Qualifications:

  • Basic experience in U.S. Payroll Tax compliance
  • Experience with HR, payroll, and tax processes/systems/software (MasterTax, WorkDay, G/L, CorpTax, Excel)
  • Proven ability to work with a team
  • Demonstrate high levels of initiative, good judgment, superior analytical and communication skills
  • Eager to take on new challenges
  • Research and opine on complex tax technical issues
  • Broad technical knowledge of tax laws and regulations
  • Understanding of accounting and business processes, and enterprise operations
