Job Description

Global Procurement & Third Party Management (GP&TPM) is Cigna's official strategic sourcing, purchasing, and supplier relationship management organization for indirect (non-drug) spend.

GP&TPM is made up of four functional areas:

  • Category Management & Strategic Sourcing (CMSS): Manages the end-to-end process for contracting with suppliers by identifying opportunities to source more effectively through careful monitoring of various drivers and conducting in-depth analysis, qualifying suppliers, leading negotiations, and evaluating bids in order to help the business select the best supplier.

  • Third Party Management (TPM): Manages Cigna supplier relationships by working with internal business areas to understand strategies, clarify precise business needs and identify supplier opportunities, and acting as the point person for both Cigna and the supplier for ongoing management of the relationship, including contract adherence, performance, risk, collaborative innovation, and service and sales delivery.

  • Third Party Risk, Strategy, & Enablement: Supports the CMSS and TPM teams by recognizing continuous improvement opportunities within the organization and supporting process change and the implementation of best practices, and leading the analysis of the overall spend with suppliers in order to identify savings and cost containment opportunities.

  • Systems, Operations & Analytics: Includes the Third Party Command Center, Procurement Operations, Business Solutions Implementation, Buying Channel Strategy, and Third Party Diversity & Sustainability.

These four functional areas all work together to ensure that Cigna manages the procurement of indirect goods and services, and third party vendor risk and performance across the enterprise.

What you’ll do:

Our intern projects are focused across the four functional areas, with the opportunity to present your findings and work to senior leadership at the end of the summer. Past intern projects include:

  • Researching industry best practices and helping to develop a broad policy statement on supply chain sustainability issues, and scoping out an approach to reducing shipping and transportations footprint.

  • Working with International suppliers and legal teams to evaluate and ensure contract compliance; evaluating international supplier risk assessments; developing plan to resolve insufficient/incomplete data and compliance issues.

  • Evaluating current processes and identifying opportunities to improve and streamline efforts across the department through the use of technology and process improvement.

  • Work with real supplier data, including analyzing historical spend and risk assessment results, to create supplier profiles that are used at the Cigna Senior Leadership team level.

What you need to do the job:

Progressing toward a bachelor’s degree in one of the following areas: Supply Chain Management, Business Administration/Management/Operations, Economics, Finance, or other related field.

Preferred GPA: 3.0 or higher.

Strong analytical and communication skills: Ability to produce actionable research findings and confidently communicate with internal and external stakeholders.

Demonstrated leadership through academic achievements, campus activities, and/or work experience.

Proficient experience with Microsoft Office.

Location: Cigna's offices in Hartford (Bloomfield), Connecticut or St. Louis, Missouri. Summer housing will be provided for hires living 50 miles or greater from the office.

Schedule: You must be available to work a 40-hour work week for 10-12 weeks summer 2022, beginning May 23, 2022. â€‹

US Candidates Only: One goal of this internship program is to prepare and identify qualified candidates for roles with Cigna post-graduation. Therefore, this temporary internship is open only to individuals who are eligible for employment in the United States after college graduation and who would not require visa sponsorship now or in the future.
