Position Summary

The Category Manager is a highly visible and strategic role in Mercury’s direct material procurement organization, responsible for developing and executing sourcing strategies to support Mercury’s global manufacturing operations and new product development programs.  Reporting to the Director of Procurement Category Management, the Category Manager leads their category team to drive continuous improvements in supplier performance to build competitive advantage for Mercury.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Category Leadership

  • Develop and drive execution of sourcing and supplier management strategies to improve supply, cost, risk management, product development, and innovation
  • Define and communicate the category vision and expectations for performance for suppliers and internal team members
  • Lead cross-functional category team, driving collaborative approach to resolve issues, execute projects, and grow the organization’s category expertise
  • Coach and mentor Buyers to develop their procurement and category-specific abilities and expertise
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships with internal and external stakeholders
  • Lead and support continuous improvement activities for Mercury internal processes and systems

Supplier Management

  • Ensure continuity of supply to support Mercury global operations, both strategically and tactically as an escalation point when needed
  • Build and maintain effective supplier capacity plans to ensure supply as Mercury demand fluctuates
  • Drive year-over-year improvements in supplier performance, striving for 100% on time delivery and 0 PPM quality performance
  • Regularly visit supplier sites to audit, verify capabilities, build expertise and relationships

Cost Management

  • Optimize costs through aggressive negotiation and value engineering during sourcing, utilizing expertise in design, input costs, processes, and competitive options
  • Execute and manage supply contracts to minimize risk and total cost of ownership
  • Consistently identify and execute cost reduction projects for current production parts
  • Minimize inflation through effective negotiation and management of supplier price increase requests
  • Lead price change management process, ensuring reviews, authorizations, and changes are timely and accurately
  • Develop and communicate accurate forecasts of future price change exposure
  • Manage Mercury investment in supplier tooling to meet operational, project, and budget needs
  • Lead cost recovery activities when supplier performance failures impart excess costs to Mercury

Project Management

  • Lead cross-functional sourcing activities to select partners best suited to meet overall Mercury needs
  • Manage team execution to ensure program deliverables for timing, cost (piece price and tooling or investment), and performance are achieved

Basic Qualifications

  • BS/BA in Engineering, Supply Chain or Operations Management, or closely related business field
  • 10+ years of experience in sourcing, supply chain management, or engineering
  • Advanced skills in supplier management, negotiation, cost and contract management, data analytics
  • Proficient with engineering prints and specifications, APQP, and PPAP processes
  • Excellent time management and organization skills, able to comfortably manage multiple ongoing projects, prioritize and adapt in response to changing business needs
  • Positive attitude, ethics, and international values to promote a healthy, diverse, high performance culture
  • Occasional day and overnight travel to domestic and international locations, up to 30%

Preferred Qualifications

  • MBA
  • C.P.M. and/or CPIM certifications
  • Lean and Six Sigma certification and application experience
  • Advanced skills in team leadership, strategy development and execution
  • Category expertise in raw materials, manufacturing processes, and supply base for molded plastic and rubber components
