Job Description

Job Summary:

We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer on the Engineering Insights team to identify and drive key analytics and engineering initiatives that improve Disney Streaming’s engineering ecosystem. You will be a crucial member of the Engineering Insights team, responsible for identifying and building solutions for insights that improve the reliability, performance, and user experience across Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu.

The Senior Software Engineer role will be working on building software applications to improve the performance and reliability of our media streaming platform and applications. By creating real-time insights and observability tools, they will decrease the number of issues users experience. This will allow service teams to see how a new production canary deployment affects specific devices and users. This role will require a team to write code consuming our events from both services and clients and using trend analysis with the correct ruleset to implement anomaly detection with root cause analysis. This will allow safer production deployments (both services and clients) while enabling quicker responses to incidences.

To be successful in this role, you need to always strive to solve complex problems at scale. A strong background in distributed services and client architecture is preferred.

Responsibilities:

  • Work with a group of engineers, data scientists, and analysts in the development of analytical models using statistical, machine learning and mining methodologies to identify relevant engineering events
  • Determine root cause of ecosystem reliability engineering events and build solutions to mitigate future failures or events
  • Translate complex problems and solutions to all levels of the organization
  • Drive innovation of the statistical and machine learning methodologies and tools used by the team
  • Partner with cross-functional teams in identifying, defining, supporting, and improving reliability and performance
  • Build real-time tools to provide observability and alerting to relevant teams

Basic Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of experience in advanced analytics
  • Expert level knowledge of machine learning. Ability to define the direction for a project and select appropriate methods and tools. Up to date knowledge of recent advancements
  • Experience implementing scalable, distributed, and highly available systems
  • Proficient in Python. Java or Scala is a plus
  • Experience in data processing using SQL and PySpark
  • Highly skilled in statistics concepts (e.g., hypothesis testing, A/B testing, regression analysis, clustering, anomaly detection)
  • Familiarity with data exploration and data visualization tools like Tableau, Looker, etc.
  • Strong analytical skills and innate curiosity to troubleshoot and dive deep into complex technical issues
  • Experience using data and analytical skills to derive key performance insights in a complex ecosystem
  • Experience identifying key value drivers in a direct-to-consumer application

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Advanced (Master or PhD) degree with specialization in Statistics, Computer Science, Data Science, Economics, Mathematics, Operations Research or another quantitative field or equivalent
  • 2+ years of experience in streaming industry, knowledge of client and server-side architecture a plus
  • 3+ years of Python, Spark, Pyspark or Scala
