Job Purpose:

The Sr. R&D Engineer Process Development is a key partner for delivery of our innovation pipeline across multiple technology platforms within Gum, Mints, Fruity Confections and Plant Based Snacking (G/M/FC).  This role is responsible for development, qualification, commercialization and start-up of new and improved products, processes, and ingredients such that they are delivered on time and in accordance with specification.  In addition, this position is expected to lead and execute process development and ensure flawless implementation into the manufacturing environment both internally and externally, while providing expertise across multiple technology disciplines.  Significant collaboration with Product Development, Technology, Global Engineering, Supply Chain, and Quality will be required.

What are we looking for?

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Food Process Engineering, Food Science or related degree
  • 5+ years technical experience in process development, production, manufacturing with understanding of leading the development, installation and start-up of new processes to deliver new products to market
  • Experience in working with outside vendors and internal and external facilities to deliver project requirements
  • Strong project management skills
  • Experience collaborating with product development in the transition of new products from Lab to pilot plant and from pilot plant to scale production
  • Travel up to 25% (including international)

Preferred Requirements:

  • 10+ years of progressive R&D Process Development and manufacturing facility experience in confectionary, snack food or pharmaceutical
  • Well-developed persuasion and influencing skills with peers as well as senior leadership through factory associates.
  • Food/beverage related experience.
  • Collaboration skills with different cultures in a Global Role

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • The Senior Engineer will be the single, process engineering point of contact on assigned projects, as part of a cross functional team, in the development and global launch of new products.
  • Provide engineering leadership and validation expertise while enabling the delivery of the specified product performance targets and attributes for G/M/FC products in order to deliver the innovation pipeline on time and within budget.
  • Initiate and lead test plan development, test execution and data analysis with both internal and external partners to quantify key process equipment parameters and fundamental mechanisms at prototype, Pilot Plant, and factory scale.
  • Identify and evaluate innovative processing options based on product attributes, including evaluation based on technical viability and economic feasibility.
  • Deliver scalable process specifications for all technology platforms collaboratively developed with Product Development, Technology, and Supply Chain to achieve exceptional product attribute targets and ensure superior product quality and food safety.
  • Delivery of IP for technical insulation of new technology  
  • Build/maintain internal and external global networks within the technology community
  • Ensure Pilot Plant and Lab have the capabilities needed to create products for current and future needs.
  • Work together and mentor more junior engineers and scientists.
  • Connects with peers in other regions, DS1 Factory Innovation, DS2 Factory Innovation and other R&D functions to share best practices and accelerate the global deployment of new innovations.
  • Both local and international travel will be required.
