Job purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for â€œdynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Sr. Motor Controls Engineer.  The Sr. Motor Controls Engineer will be primarily responsible for calibrating inverters for optimal operation of development motors. Further, this candidate will be responsible for advanced development control methods.

Key responsibilities

  • Communicate Existing & Future Controls Capabilities & Limitations to Electric Machine Design Team
  • Work Closely with Electric Machine Controls Development & Innovation Teams to Keep Abreast of Controls Technology Roadmap & Existing Capabilities
  • Perform Characterization & Performance Evaluation of New Electric Machine Designs
  • Support Electric Machine Design Trade-Off Studies, Design Analysis, & Design Review as it Relates to Electric Machine Controls
  • Determine, Document, and Share Best Practice Techniques & Procedures and Apply Them to Analysis, Design, and Experimental Testing
  • Participate in technical conferences to grow competency
  • Mentor the Less Experienced and be a Role Model for BorgWarner Beliefs

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering required, Master’s preferred
  • 5+ years of experience required, but 8+ years is preferred in developing and implementing Electric Machine and Power Electronics Controls
  • In-depth Understanding of:
    • Vector Control
    • Direct Torque Control
    • Various PWM Techniques
    • Physics-based Modeling of Electric Machines and Power Electronics
    • Observer Design Theory
    • Discrete Domain Control System Analysis and Implementation
    • MATLAB/Simulink Modeling of Electric Machines and Power Electronics and Their Controls
    • Electric Machine & Power Electronics Loss Mechanisms
  • Working Knowledge of the Fundamentals of Operation of:
    • Surface Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines
    • Interior Permanent Magnet Synchronous Machines
    • AC Induction Machines
    • Wound Field Synchronous Machines
    • Power Semiconductor Devices (IGBT, MOSFET)
  • Preferred Experience Characterizing New Electric Machine Designs Including Experimental Identification of:
    • Flux-Linkages
    • Resistances
    • Inductances
    • Optimum Operating Points
    • Losses
  • Excellent Oral and Written Communication Skills
  • Ability to Solve Problems Efficiently and Effectively
  • Ability to Work Under Limited Supervision
  • Ability and Willingness to Travel 10% Domestically or Internationally
  • Automotive Traction Application Experience Strongly Preferred
  • Strong Fundamental Engineering Skillset and Ability to Apply Fundamental Engineering Concepts to a Variety of Complex Tasks and Situations
