Job purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for â€œdynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Sr. Engineer, Electric Machine Design.  The Sr. Engineer, Electric Machine Design will provide world class electric machine design and analysis, for new product development and continuous improvement projects.  Often instrumental in attracting and obtaining new company business contracts. Generates innovative new concepts in electric machine core product areas such as traction motors and powertrain accessory motors.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide electric machine design and analysis of
    • IPM machines
    • Induction machines
    • Wound rotor synchronous machines
    • New Electric Machine concepts
  • Generate and prove out new concepts in core product areas (machines, control, cooling)
  • Develop and utilize multi-physics design optimization tools
  • Provide inverter/machine system co-simulation
  • Develop magnetic equivalent circuit design/analysis tools
  • Develop lumped-parameter thermal models of electric machines
  • Provide first-order cooling system design (air, water jacket, direct oil cooling) using thermal analysis
  • Support predictive noise modeling with magnetic forcing function analysis
  • Perform above responsibilities using:
    • Maxwell 2D & 3D (Magnetic FEA)
    • Ansys Mechanical (Structural and Thermal FEA)
    • Simplorer
    • MotorCAD
    • Matlab/Simulink
  • Coordinate and support dyne testing for validating design & analysis predictions
  • Provide troubleshooting support as needed for product development and field problems
  • Communicate effectively with customers on requirements discussions and design presentations
  • Provide directions for electric machine technology roadmap, and define projects to pursue 
  • Support manufacturing engineering on process development for electric machines
  • Evaluate IP in electric machines, control, cooling
  • Provide competitive analysis for electric machines
  • Work with a global group of technical specialists, that are interconnected and committed to continuous learning from best practices and each other
  • Teach and mentor other engineers
  • Participate in technical conferences to grow competency

What we’re looking for

  • Ph.D. and MS degree in electrical engineering preferred, BS in electrical engineering required
  • Minimum 8 years’ industry experience in electric machine design required, and Submit Matter Expertise in Electric Machine Design preferred
  • Proven track record in design and analysis of electric machines required
  • Proficiency in magnetic FEA required
  • Proficiency in electric machine design programs required
  • Proficiency in thermal analysis programs required
  • Proficiency in structural and thermal FEA preferred
  • Very good knowledge of e-machine control methods and implementation
  • Good familiarity with inverter hardware
  • Experience in performance and durability testing electric machines
  • Experience in a manufacturing plant for electric machines
  • Holds patents that were utilized in production machines
  • History of progressive technical publications
  • Excellent people skills and history of teamwork
  • Works under minimal supervision
