Job purpose

BorgWarner DriveTrain Systems is currently looking for â€œdynamic, results driven” individual to join as a Software Development Lead Engineer in our Application Engineering organization at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, MI. In this role, the Software Development Lead will be responsible for all technical aspects of the software project and for the planning and management of the software development activities for key customer projects. Utilizing their technical expertise, the SW Development Lead will specify and guide the team in software development utilizing a combination of Model based design, autocode generation, and embedded c programming.  The project will follow the BorgWarner software development process (complies to Automotive SPICE) through the software development lifecycle from specification, design, development, test, release, and maintenance phases.  The SW Development Lead will ensure the software product deadlines and deliverables are achieved.  The successful candidate will join a respectful, collaborative, and talented team, and will work in a professional high-tech environment.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the software project development.
  • Responsible for technical software project management on DriveTrain System products.
  • Plan and manage the software development work for the assigned projects in compliance with the group’s policies and processes.
  • Define the software release development schedules and detailed release scope.
  • Identify and analyze sources of software requirements, specify software requirements, assign requirements to releases and iterations, baseline and release software requirements.
  • Define, design, develop and verify solutions in software releases that comply with the software requirements and the software architecture.
  • Drive the software project team culture to meet the defined process standards.
  • Interface with the customers as required to understand and deliver to the customer requirements
  • Interface with all project stake holders on project needs and status updates.
  • Manage the project software sub-suppliers.
  • Provide technical direction and mentorship to the software engineers supporting the assigned projects.
  • Coach and Develop other team members and Software development leads in both technical and functional areas
  • Coordinate across projects with other software development leads to identify best practices and process improvement opportunities
  • Follow & support the organizational engineering processes including change process, version control and best practices

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor degree in Engineering required, Master’s degree preferred
  • Automotive experience required, drivetrain and all-wheel drive systems preferred
  • Familiarity with automotive electrical systems (brush/brushless DC motors, solenoids, relays, electromagnetic coils, switches, indicators, etc.) preferred
  • 8+ years’ experience developing embedded software is required.
  • 3+ years’ experience leading and mentoring other engineers on technical assignments or as a software project technical lead. Preferred drivetrain controllers.
  • Agile SCRUM MASTER role experience preferred.
  • Experience developing software in an AUTOSAR compliant software architecture is preferred.
  • Experience developing software for ISO26262 Functional Safety compliant products is preferred.
  • Experience developing software using a Model-Based toolchain. Matlab Simulink/Stateflow preferred.
  • Strong working knowledge of C programming language for embedded systems is required.
  • Proven ability to generate efficient C source code from model-based designs is required. TargetLink preferred.
  • Excellent model and source code debugging skills is required.
  • Experienced developing and verifying software to a comprehensive software process is required. ASPICE preferred.
  • Expertise working with network protocols (e.g. CAN) and associated tools is required.
  • Experience with Software Configuration, Release and Change Management is required.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills is required.
  • Excellent time management skills is required. 
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision is required.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English language required
  • Knowledge of Root Cause Analysis preferred.
  • Travel 10% required
