Job Description

Job summary
Come build the future of entertainment with us.
Are you interested in shaping the future of movies and television? Do you want to define the next generation of how and what Amazon customers are watching?

Prime Video is a premium streaming service that offers customers a vast collection of TV shows and movies - all with the ease of finding what they love to watch in one place. We offer customers thousands of popular movies and TV shows from Originals and Exclusive content to exciting live sports events. We also offer our members the opportunity to subscribe to add-on channels which they can cancel at anytime and to rent or buy new release movies and TV box sets on the Prime Video Store. Prime Video is a fast-paced, growth business - available in over 240 countries and territories worldwide. The team works in a dynamic environment where innovating on behalf of our customers is at the heart of everything we do. If this sounds exciting to you, please read on.

Key job responsibilities
You will be working in an agile environment, collaborating with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design, refine and bring to market innovative products and large distributed services to help lead fundamental changes in the industry. The services you delivered will also be low latency, low cost, fault-tolerant and easy to manage/use.

A day in the life
You will be building one of the largest and most scalable services in Prime Video. Have you thought about the challenges of building a scalable service for video processing in contrast with processing JSON files?

Using AWS to scale to continuously monitor 10,000 concurrent video streams is just the first step of the challenges we are facing here. You will also be taking on the exciting but challenging journey of optimising the services to keep both latency and cost low. And like any good engineering teams, we'd also want our services to be resilient, how will you help us on building a highly available service? Is 99.9% availability number good enough for all our customers? How would you measure it and what if all of one customer's requests fall into that failed 0.01%?

About the team
Our vision is to help Prime Video ensure customers experience the highest quality video even as the service scales to content from any source, available on any device, anywhere. To achieve this we develop industry-leading mechanisms to measure and evaluate the quality of the video experience. We operate a service with the goal to scale to monitor 1000s of channels, 50,000+ annual live events and 1000s of new content items. We package the capability in ways that teams across Prime Video can develop tests that detect audio/video defects automatically and instantly at any point in the video pipeline, from content origin to a customers' device. We use the expertise we develop to advance the state-of-the-art in objective measures that can detect defects and predict our customer's perceptions of image and audio quality, enabling the Prime Video service to optimize the delivery of content that delights customers with the best possible pictures and sound.

We're teaching computers to watch TV and find the tedious defects in our video playback, thus saving you the bother of looking for them yourself, or of our customers experiencing the displeasure of finding problems before we do.

The solutions we're building are demanding. We cooperate with teams across Amazon and create novel algorithms to detect defects and measure quality. This requires techniques from across image processing, image analysis, computer vision and machine learning. We need to optimise those algorithms to run accurately, efficiently and quickly so that reliable results are available as close to real-time as is possible. The scope of our charter means we're also building the services that can capture, transport and then process huge amounts of video data. The range of problems we have to solve in our space, and the enormous potential to positively impact Prime Video's ability to scale, provides a breath of opportunities for engineers to grow and develop their skills.
