Key job responsibilities
You will be working in an agile environment, collaborating with experienced cross-disciplinary Amazonians to conceive, design, refine and bring to market innovative products and large distributed services to help lead fundamental changes in the industry. The services you deliver will be low latency, cost-efficient, highly scalable, fault-tolerant and easy to use.
A day in the life
You will be building one of the largest and most scalable services in Prime Video. Our goal is to identify, within seconds, any audio or visual defects across the thousands of different TV shows, movies, live sports events and broadcast channels being watched at any time by our customers worldwide. We need to do this with low latency, low cost, high accuracy and high resiliency. The team designs, builds and operates the services that perform this video defect analysis at scale. Our engineers work closely with applied scientists who design and build new defect detectors, the Live Operations teams who manage our live sports events and channels, and the catalog teams who manage our ever-growing library of TV shows and movies.
Using some of the latest AWS capabilities we architect for high availability whilst also optimising for low cost, to ensure we can reliably deliver the broadest possible coverage.
About the team
We're teaching computers to watch TV! Our vision is to help Prime Video customers experience the highest quality video, from any source, watching on any device, anywhere. To achieve this we develop industry-leading mechanisms to measure and evaluate the quality of the video experience. We operate a service with the goal to scale to monitor 1000s of channels, 50,000+ annual live events and 1000s of daily new content items. We package this capability in ways that teams across Prime Video can use to detect audio/video defects automatically and instantly at any point in the video pipeline, from content origin to a customer’s device. We use the expertise we develop to advance the state-of-the-art in objective measures that can detect defects and predict our customers’ perceptions of image and audio quality, enabling Prime Video services to optimize the delivery of content that delights customers with the best possible pictures and sound.
The solutions we're building are demanding. We collaborate with teams across Amazon and create novel algorithms to detect defects and measure quality, using techniques spanning image processing, image analysis, computer vision and machine learning. We optimise those algorithms to run accurately, efficiently and quickly so that reliable results are available as close to real-time as is possible. The scope of our charter means we're also building the services that can capture, transport and then process huge amounts of video data. The range of problems we have to solve in our space, and the enormous potential to positively impact Prime Video's ability to scale, provides a breath of opportunities for engineers to grow and develop their skills.
