Senior Lead Java Development Engineer

Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.

Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.

Brief overview of the business areas

 

We are a global team of full stack development engineers supporting an entirely in-house application called Falcon for our global Equities Flow and Delta One trading businesses. Our system contains components for order management, an algo container and several algo implementations, RFQs, options trading and front office risk management.

 

The team’s ethos is to enable the business to grow and continue to generate revenue by delivering robust and scalable IT systems. Reducing manual process and operational risk is also a focus – hence STP solutions form an important part of the projects developed by the team.

 

We interact closely with the front office trading business, primarily through our product owner who is the global head of the ETF trading business.

 

 

What you will be doing;

 

  • Functional delivery that includes strategic revenue enhancing capabilities as well as regulatory and other programme deliverables
  • Optimisation and maintenance of existing Falcon platform

 

Responsible For:

  • Full software development lifecycle using Scala and Java
  • Automated testing and deployment of small and frequent releases
  • Development of new features of the Falcon platform
  • Level 2 support. Analysis and troubleshooting of issues. The team adheres to a DevOps model and will be expected to support the production availability of their service
  • Engage with Product owners, Front office, consumers on E2E delivery of functional deliverables under various technical and regulatory initiatives

Requirements

Essential Skills/Experience

To be successful in this role you should have proven experience within the Technology sector with knowledge of the following skills:

Required:

  • Strong problem solving skills/proactive self-starter able to take initiative and get things done
  • Extensive experience and understanding/knowledge of distributed high performance systems and architectures
  • Strong Core Java development skills and knowledge including data structures, concurrency/multithreading and language/JVM features coming with JDK 8+
  • JVM monitoring, profiling, tuning and debugging
  • Extensive experience with test driven development (TDD)
  • Familiar with databases - particularly NOSQL technologies
  • Proficient with Unix/Linux as well as Windows command line and tools
  • Able to work in DevOps/ agile environment and culture
  • Able to support production availability of their service
  • Ability to work as part of a large global and communicate effectively with Front office stakeholders, Quants and consumers (when necessary)
  • Ideal candidate will be a reliable, self-starter, problem solver
  • Recognised domain expert with an exemplary track record
  • Capable of owning issues / deliveries through to completion
  • Ability to mentor and grow junior members of the team

 

Beneficial/optional:

  • Previous experience from working in the eTrading domain
  • Previous experience with algorithmic trading and low latency solutions
  • Scala development experience
  • Google Cloud Platform (or any other cloud technology) experience
  • Docker/other virtual containers technologies experience
  • React/Javascript development experience
  • Exposure to Equities Front Office trading environment and trade lifecycle
  • Equity Derivatives pricing, knowledge of factors impacting valuation and risk measures (Greeks)

 

The role will primarily be remote based but maybe required in London site Head Office in Canary Wharf 1-2 days a month.
