 Position Summary

The Senior Technical Specialist will support the Manufacturing & Technology business with deep understanding of battery chemistry and materials science, and synthetic materials science, engineering, and markets.  Maintains relationships with academia and industry and tracks latest technology advances.  Makes recommendations on which technologies in which to focus and which prospects to pursue.  Represents Bechtel in discussions with or presentations to client management or senior technical personnel, and in so doing may affect Bechtel’s image or objectives.

A.  Supervision Received

Receives administrative supervision from the Manufacturing & Technology managers or other group/department managers with assignments given in terms of broad general objectives and limits.

B.  Supervision Exercised

Provides functional guidance to engineers, scientists, or technicians; however, is not typically responsible for staff planning or salary administration.

C.  Contacts

Maintains continuing contact with senior management, client technical decision-makers, client representatives, suppliers, regulatory authorities, educational institutions, and professional societies as required to obtain and exchange information pertinent to assignments.  Maintains contact with outside consultants. 

Responsibilities:

Serves as consultant to Bechtel’s Manufacturing & Technology business.

Develops and maintains deep understanding of battery chemistry and material science and synthetic materials markets, including latest technical advances in academia and industry.

Makes recommendations to management on which technologies in which to focus resources and prospects to pursue. 

Conducts or leads special studies on economic feasibility and on complex new technologies, methods and materials.

Reviews engineering or scientific concepts, proposals, drawings, calculations and specifications.

Participates directly in new business efforts involving specialized and unique engineering or scientific applications.  Interviews client personnel to determine their needs, develops scope for cost estimates for services and participates in proposal preparation and presentation.

Provides substantive guidance and direction to specialty scientific or engineering personnel in the development of advanced design criteria and specifications.

Screens and recommends selection of special outside consultants; coordinates their activities and monitors their performance.

Interprets new or special governmental regulations, engineering codes, standards, criteria and performance data.

Develops and coordinates special technical educational and training programs for Bechtel personnel.

Takes an active and visible role, representing Bechtel at professional conferences and on committees.

Actively investigates, evaluates and contributes to technological/scientific advances in the specialized field, and keeps management informed on these important new advances.

Provides professional guidance to senior management and senior client technical/scientific personnel.

Provides guidance and support to Business Development Managers

Job Knowledge:

Substantial and extraordinary technical knowledge in chemistry or materials science.

Knowledge of materials manufacturing processes.   

Knowledge of scientific or engineering systems, calculations, applications and construction methods and materials, and engineering or scientific application of computers.

Knowledge of related construction practices and the economics involved.

Thorough knowledge of industrial and regulatory standards and design criteria in the engineering or scientific discipline.

Skill in oral and written communications.

Qualifications and Skills:

Basic Qualifications:

PhD degree from an accredited university in applicable engineering or scientific discipline and 15+ years of progressive work experience

Minimum Qualifications:

Progressive work experience in a field requiring deep engineering or scientific knowledge.

Oral, written, and graphic communication and presentation skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience in materials manufacturing, including development of new manufacturing technologies.

Understanding of business fundamentals, including strategy, finance, and innovation.

Participation in the activities and proceedings of prestigious academic and professional societies, universities, and recognized national boards and bodies.
