The Senior Software Engineer writes and maintains code within cloud-based applications and systems to implement capabilities and features, improve performance and maintainability, while reducing technical debt in alignment with product and technology roadmaps. The Senior Software Engineer plays a role in Agile planning, providing advice and guidance, mentoring other engineers, and monitoring emerging trends.

Key Responsibilities

Agile Planning

Works with Product Management to understand the challenges that customers and end users face in their day-to-day work and partner with them to design viable solutions.

Recommends viable solutions to processes, technology, and interfaces that improve the effectiveness of the team and reduce technical debt.

Foresees capacity requirements for component usage and identifies limitations.

Provides input into story sizing, backlog grooming, and release planning.

API Development

Contributes to product and solution designs to address critical issues and complex problems supporting our Search API and the microservices based architecture supporting it

Builds software applications across multiple platforms in response to the needs of stakeholders.

Understands technical architecture and writes software and automated tests that are aligned with agreed upon standards.

Performs trouble-shooting efforts and investigations when necessary.

Application Support

Provides ongoing support, monitoring, and maintenance of deployed products.

Advice and Guidance

Actively works with other sr. software engineers, team leads, and technical architects for technical guidance and recommendation.

Emerging Technology Monitoring

Actively participates in the engineering community, staying up to date on new software technologies and best practices and shares insights with others in the organization.

Works with team leads, managers, and technical architects to define and enhance the team's technology roadmap.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent combination of industry related professional experience and education

               Required Knowledge, Experience & Education:

5+ years in developing software which runs on the JVM, with a strong preference for Java. Scala is an additional plus

Knowledge of how to design and optimize access of relational databases such as PostgreSQL

Working experience in design, development, and implementation of highly scalable, high-volume software systems and components, client-facing web applications, and major Internet-oriented applications and systems

Development of cloud native software which runs on and integrates in the Cloud with a preference for AWS technologies such as ECS, SQS, and RDS

Creation of containerized solutions which can be run with Docker

Development of software which interacts with messaging systems such as ActiveMQ, Kinesis, Kafka, etc

Creation and Maintenance of APIs using RESTful techniques

Experience in creating new infrastructure with tools like Terraform

Use of distributed version control software such as Git

Experience working in an Agile team environment
