Join us at Amazon Web Services (AWS) in building the foundation of global scale compute platforms in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2). We work on global-scale compute platforms, with special focus on trusted compute, serverless & container virtualization technologies and server fleet tooling for AWS EC2. As part of the EC2 Instance Platforms organization, we invent, own, and drive the building blocks that are the foundation of the cloud. You will be joining our teams working on the high-performance virtual machine monitors, hypervisor security systems, and the system management software building blocks that power AWS. You will participate in the full development cycle from design and implementation to deployment and operations. In this role, you will work on Firecracker [1], an open source virtualization technology that is purpose-built for creating and managing secure, multi-tenant container and function-based services that provide serverless operational models. Firecracker is already the deployed globally as part of AWS Lambda [2] and AWS Fargate, [3] and is also integrated by 10+ teams beyond AWS as part of their platforms [4]. Firecracker has an ambitious roadmap of continued innovation in the quickly expanding serverless container and function space - come help us make history!

Your main goal will be to create long-term customer value. You will: work to understand our customers' needs and engineer new features to meet them; own and automate operations; contribute new ideas and methods to continuously improve quality and development efficiency; and innovate in the area of virtualization. You will also be a maintainer of the Firecracker open source project.

This position involves on-call responsibilities. This is typically done once every 8 weeks. We strive to keep this down and ensure our systems are fault tolerant. Our team values work-life balance and respect each others time.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Degree in computer science or a related discipline, or equivalent work experience.
· Experience in the areas low-level software engineering and/or systems programming.
· 8+ years of industry experience.
· Expert in the typical Linux toolbox of open source software development and administration tools.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· 10+ years of industry experience focused in the areas of low-level software engineering and/or systems programming, for example with Linux, C, C++, or Rust.
· Expert in Linux networking and OS internals, and eager to teach others.
· Passionate about working in the open source community.
· Comfortable in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial environment where engineers are owners.
