At Amazon Web Services (AWS), we are helping large enterprises build complex mathematical optimization models on the AWS Cloud. We are applying both OR and ML technologies to large volumes of data and against a wide spectrum of problems in supply chain and logistics, inventory and resource planning, manufacturing and retail, network and service operations, and marketing and sales. We are looking for a motivated individual with a recognized background in mathematical optimization. The person should have current or prior academic experience with a heavy practical consultative component, or industry experience conducting research in the area of mathematical/statistical modeling and analysis.
This is a customer-facing role and you will be required to travel to client locations and deliver professional services as needed.
The senior optimization scientist will work in conjunction with the sales team, solutions architects and professional service counterparts. He/She will develop quantum and nature-inspired solutions for a wide variety of industries together with a team of experts. Major responsibilities include:
· Engage with commercial enterprise customers to understand their business drivers and application portfolio.
· Educate, envision and inspire customers on potential of OR and ML to help their business.
· Understand the customer’s business need in different industries and guide them to a solution using our AWS Services.
· Formulate business problems with statistical, mathematical and/or simulation models (e.g. define optimization variables, objectives and constraints)
· Enable effective optimization by retrieving and aggregating data from multiple sources and compiling it into a digestible and actionable format
· Analyze performance: run back-tests and/or A/B testing and analyze the relative performance of your OR models
· Publish in scientific journals, create white papers, write blogs, and build demos that help customers adopt OR solutions on the AWS cloud.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

· Master's Degree in Operations Research, Mathematics, Computer Science or other quantitative disciplines
· 5+ years experience in mathematical modelling (optimization) acquired within the industry or academia
· Experience in statistical modelling using R, Python or similar tools and optimization using XPress, Cplex or similar tools
· Strong analytical skills, including SQL, and ability to pull data to identify and solve ambiguous problems
· Excellent oral and written communication skills with technical and non-technical stakeholders across multiple business units

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

· PhD in a quantitative field (Operations Research, Applied Mathematics, Physics, Economics, Computer Science, Stats or Equivalent)
· Experience in several of the following areas: Bayesian Optimization, Reinforcement Learning, Online Optimization, Game Theory, Probabilistic Modeling, Simulation
· Research experience in quantum computation applied to e.g., financial, oil & gas, scheduling, and transport.
· Experience defining metrics and data science processes
· Research track record in areas relevant to business data science
