Organization
Position open within the Valuation & Analysis team within the GEM UK Business Platform. This role will be part of the Expertise Center Quantitative Research & Modeling of GEM, whose mission is to ensure the optimal implementation of Pricing, forecasting and optimization models and methods in GEM.
Projects will be mainly driven by GEM UK Business Platform
YOUR contribution
Key missions
The role of the Quant is to combine in-depth business knowledge, strong analytical skills and appetite for coding in order to contribute to the GEM UK mission, with focus on model development related to power & gas trading activities.
- Direct support of Origination and structuring activities:
- Renewable PPAs:
- Pricing of exotic contract structures and assessment of the risks for the relevant factors. Development of EVA templates for decision support.
- Modelling of long-term scenarios in coordination with market analysts.
- Pricing of exotic options for power, battery assets or gas storage.
- Novel methods for valuing new structures in GEM UK for example exclusivity agreements
- Support to the short-term trading activities:
- Development of prediction models, using advanced statistical modelling techniques.
- Development of web apps with interactive data visualisation.
- Support for trading optimisation of wind PPA and pumped storage as required.
- Back testing trading and modelling performance.
- Transversal coordination with other teams in GEM.
- Point of contact with EC QRM.
- Translate methodologies applied in other countries to the UK and share experience in UK to benefit other teams.
- Sourcing expertise across the quantitative team for ad-hoc requirements in the UK.
- Identify areas for improvement in the quantitative area and report past and future activities.
- Familiarity with data management across GEM.
- Identify new sources of data relevant for market intelligence. Coordination with Data teams to ensure its applicability to business activities and incorporation in appropriate data repositories
About YOU
Hard skills
- Good understanding of power & gas markets in UK and globally
- Application of scientific methods to solve complex problems.
- Software development skills:
- Strong data analysis capabilities. Familiarity with data APIs and SQL databases.
- Use agile principles for delivering tools to internal clients.
- Use a version control system (GitHub) and pursue collaborative work across teams.
- Excellent coding practices, such as testing and documentation.
- Capable of statistical modelling and its application in a programming language such as python (for example regression models, linear optimization, GARCH…)
- Experience with optimisation modelling and its application in a programming language such as python/GAMS.
- Demonstrated experience of Financial modelling theory for options including Monte Carlo diffusion model
- Ability to explain and convey messages about complex issues in a manner which is appropriate to the audience:
- Mathematical formulation for quantitative audience.
- Examples and case studies for Front Officers etc

Education and professional background
- University degree in Mathematics, Engineering, Computer Sciences, Financial Engineering, Statistics, Physics
- 2 to 5-year experience of working in the Energy Sector, UK power & gas preferred. More experienced candidates will also be considered.
