Global Communications, designs and implements communications strategies which support HSBC’s business objectives, in line with our values, and enhance and protect our reputation among key stakeholders. 

We are currently seeking an ambitious individual to join our team as Senior Public Affairs Manager, working together with colleagues to define, manage and achieve divisional business targets. 

Role purpose:

The role reports to the Head of UK Political Engagement and involves:

  • Leading the bank’s analysis of and response to UK public policy issues, with particular focus on those issues linked to the Government’s Building Back Better agenda and UK economic recovery;
  • Supporting senior leaders’ political engagement on such issues through comprehensive briefing aligned to other external facing teams and wider strategic priorities; and
  • Representing the bank in external engagement including with policymakers, politicians and trade associations on UK public policy issues.

In this role, you will:

  • Monitor and analyse UK policy and political developments in relation to the Building Back Better agenda and UK economic recovery, and their potential impact on the bank
  • Monitor and analyse other UK policy areas, including corporate governance, tax, planning and housing as required. 
  • Ensure internal leadership teams have timely information on emerging issues and their potential impact on the bank.
  • Identify opportunities for constructive external engagement on UK public policy that will meet strategic objectives and enhance the bank’s reputation.
  • Demonstrate technical expertise to advise, guide and translate public policy issues for business lines and functions.
  • Develop and distributes a compelling and digestible narrative for the UK and Group leadership on such policy initiatives that is (i) aligned to the bank’s strategic priorities and (ii) balanced against campaigns driven by other external facing teams.
  • Build internal relationships by communicating, influencing and negotiating effectively with bank leadership and technical experts.
  • Ensure HSBC’s interests are represented at industry, political and consumer-focused forums and those professional and positive relationships are developed and maintained. 
 

Qualifications

 

To be successful in the role, you should meet the following requirements:

  • Experience of working in Government, politics or policy or public affairs roles
  • Understanding of how public policy and is formulated
  • Insight into the political process and wider influences on the policy agenda
  • Proven ability to forge new links with a broad network of key policymakers, industry partners and trade associations
  • Understanding of UK political relations 
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Ensure adherence to all Communications governance and policies.
  • Comply with Group policies and procedures and maintaining all required records.
