Job purpose

BorgWarner PowerDrive Systems is currently looking for a “dynamic, results driven” individual to join as Senior Functional Safety Engineer at our Propulsion Technical Center (PTC) in Auburn Hills, MI.

Join us in developing state of the art safety solutions for hybrid and electric vehicles in a fast-paced marketplace.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead the engineering team through the application of ISO 26262 at all levels (system, sub-system, component) for HW and SW
  • Act as the main engineering customer interface for safety reviews and discussions – safety case, present how we meet TSR, SW and HW safety requirements.  Present to OEM
  • Develop the Technical Safety Concept based on identified Product Safety Requirements and Functional Safety Concept – specification of requirements
  • Ensure traceability of safety requirements and design throughout the product lifecycle
  • Perform Functional Safety Analysis including FMEDA and FTA
  • Define the safety architecture including ASIL decomposition, freedom from interference, dependant failures, required redundancies, and shutoff paths
  • Coach engineering teams to understand system safety concepts and implement these concepts in hardware and software designs
  • Provide required engineering input for the Safety Plan, Safety Concept and Safety Case to the functional safety manager (FSM)
  • Ensure the proper completion of verification reviews of safety work products
  • Lead the appropriate safety analysis to ensure all product development safety activities are performed, using industry best practices and the ISO process
  • Support the creation of the system safety test specification by supporting validation engineers in defining safety test cases using the safety requirements and safety measures.
  • Provide coaching, training, and mentorship to engineering peers on safety methodologies to increase safety awareness and best practices
  • Support customer inquiries on project safety topics by supporting RFQs for new projects and response to questions for existing projects

What we’re looking for

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering required
  • Master’s degree in Systems, Electrical, Mechanical, or Software Engineering preferred
  • In-depth knowledge of ISO 26262 required
  • ISO 26262 certification preferred
  • 5+ years’ experience in automotive system development (electrification preferred)
  • 3+ years’ experience in functional safety preferred
  • Experience in applying functional safety to automotive drivetrain or propulsion systems is preferred
  • Organized and structured work style and attention to detail are required
  • Experience with safety analysis tool Medini Analyze preferred
  • Experience with JIRA, Polarion, and Method Park Stages tools or equivalent is required
  • Experience with an ASPICE based system development process required
  • Strong PC knowledge of Microsoft Office tools required
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English language required
  • Willingness to travel up to 10% is preferred
