Our technology teams in the UK work closely with HSBC’s global businesses to help design and build digital services that allow our millions of customers around the world, to bank quickly, simply and securely. We also run and manage our IT infrastructure, data centres and core banking systems that power the world’s leading international bank.
Our multi-disciplined teams include: DevOps engineers, IT architects, front and back end developers, infrastructure specialists, cyber experts, as well as project and programme managers.
Following extensive investment across our Technology and Digital domains and with plans for continued expansion throughout 2021 and beyond, we are currently seeking a Senior Product Engineering Manager to join HSBC Technology.
Role context

- Senior Product Engineering Manager is responsible for the management of all data systems that support the HSBC Group across multiple businesses and functions. These include (but are not limited to) Collibra, Group Big Data Services, Teradata, SAS, Group Customer Data Utility and other cross business data systems.
- Data delivery both on-premise and to Cloud, is a critical step in the successful delivery of projects. HSBC created the JuniperX Data Framework, which is intended to become the default method of data governance and delivery between HSBC and the cloud providers.
- The Senior Product Engineering Manager (including JuniperX and our legacy ingestion technology) will shape the strategy, run the DevOps and engineering teams and interact with all stakeholders within (and externally to) HSBC.
- As the intention is to open source JuniperX, the role will also work with vendors, partners and other financial institutions to ensure that the requirements and interests of HSBC are reflected in the product roadmap. This role is visible within the organisation and will require the role holder to build and maintain strong networks across all the global businesses and functions.
- The role sits within Group Data Technology (GDT) and report into the CTO GDT.
What you will be doing;
Principal Accountabilities:
Impact on the Business
- Accountable for IT portfolio management for Ingestion within the role scope
- indirectly through co-ordination of system schedules where the service is owned by another IT owner (e.g. Service Sustainability)
- aligning IT strategy and with business objectives
- Develop, lead and maintain an IT strategy to support Ingestion customer base including oversight of architectural design
- Management of business relationships globally to ensure and maintain relevance and appropriateness of IT strategy to emerging business priorities
- Influence across global business and supporting functions in a matrixed environment, without direct control of the resources
- Execution of DevOps and IT delivery to Data Services through a managed order book
- Management of the Ingestion IT budget / resources and alignment of regional objectives / resources with the Global Business requirements
- Global accountability for IT spend, FTE, delivery and support of Ingestion
- Secure quality and maintenance of IT solutions so as to support sustainability of our service proposition to customers
- Ensure compliance with external regulatory requirements, internal control standards and policies during the course of project execution
- Measure and improve service quality
Leadership & Teamwork
- Review, build out and lead a high calibre DevOps team, ensuring high engagement and motivation levels
- Develop critical skillsets in team members and provide a stimulating work environment
- Recruit and retain high calibre, diverse team members

- Manage key stakeholders in Technology and across the Group to identify priorities and recognise potential areas of opportunities

Customers / Stakeholders
- Accountable for the strategic Agile/DevOps delivery framework
- Communication with the relevant DevOps IT leads/Business stakeholders to ensure that IT delivery is along the overall strategic objectives set out for IT functions.
- Maintains partnerships with key GB/GF stakeholders, including, but not limited to other businesses within other group functions
Operational Effectiveness & Control
- Accountable for implementing the optimal Business Service strategy, including Make vs. Buy options, Procurement of Third Party Vendors and where relevant, GSC location strategy
- Accountable for implementing the optimal GDT DevOps sourcing and location strategy
- Accountable for ensuring appropriate standards of vendor management and vendor risk management are applied to Data Services for any third party vendors
- Accountable for ensuring appropriate global GDT infrastructure and technology requirements are in place
- Accountable for the completion, maintenance and adherence to the Risk Appetite and Risk Control Assessment for Ingestion including Cloud, 3rd party outsourcing
- Accountable for ensuring effective controls are in place to manage operational, regulatory, information security, contingency, vendor and fraud risk
Requirements
What you will bring to the role;
To be successful in this role you should have proven experience within the Technology sector with knowledge of the following skills:
Knowledge & Experience / Qualifications
- The role requires significant credibility and a capacity to rapidly identify key opportunities, issues and themes which have material impact with the ability to establish clear action plans in conjunction with the GB/GFs
- University degree in Information Technology, Computer Science or related discipline or proven experience performing a similar role
- Track record in technology leadership role at senior management level.
- Experience in product management / engineering in a complex environment on a regional or global scale.
- Subject matter expertise in data technologies, data governance and cloud
- Excellent knowledge of frontend and backend development and DevOps.
- Evident experience in managing a Global Technology function
- Experience in handling operational support with SRE principles
- Strong leadership and people management skills together with prior experience in managing large and matrixed IT teams
- Solid interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to manage in a dynamic and global environment
- Excellent stakeholder management capability and experience in working with senior executive level
- Strong change orientation, creative thinking and effective in leading flexible agile teams
- Strong technical skills in understanding and deploying enterprise level application systems that are scalable and complex
- Understanding of recent developments in technology including Agile methods, Continuous Delivery, Artificial intelligence, data classification, automation.
- Knowledge and sensitivity related to working across diverse geographies, time-zones and cultures
Desired Skills:
- Agile proficient and knowledgeable/experience in other agile methodologies. Ideally certified.
- Excellent Project skills, Strong data analysis knowledge required
- Proficiency in other Microsoft Office products, particularly PowerPoint, DevOps tooling skills and knowledge.
- Strong communication & networking skills
- Ability to work autonomously and take accountability to execute and deliver on goals; strong commitment to high quality standards.

This role will primarily be London based but some travel may be required.
