The Senior Procurement Engineer is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of sourcing strategies of complex parts and optimizing production supply for new product launches or other strategic company initiatives.

The organization depends on the Supply Chain Analyst r to proactively collaborate with the global supply base and internal cross-functional team members, ensuring that components are sourced at the lowest total cost, including risk management, and that robust supply chains are developed to consistently deliver conforming products in the quantities required to meet Mercury’s global business needs.

Job Accountabilities and Performance Criteria

Supplier Relationship Management: (20%)

Source and launch new product from concept stage to supporting ongoing operations.  Maintain effective business communications/relationships with suppliers and internal customers to understand project/production fluctuations, to proactively disseminate relevant information to all stakeholders and meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Serve as a technical consultant and collaborative resource with suppliers and internal customers to ensure all needs and expectations are understood, and addressed in a manner that ensures mutually successful, on-time completion of projects
  • Support sourcing strategy development and execution
  • Facilitate and analyze Requests for Quote to support sourcing processes
  • Visit current and potential suppliers to perform audits, and to conduct business reviews with current suppliers to ensure engagement and proper support of Mercury’s strategic needs
  • Manage cost effectively.  Use negotiation and cost management tools to understand key cost drivers and total cost of ownership, and drive cost optimization for Mercury in all sourcing and supplier management activities.
  • Execute purchase orders, requisitions, and appropriation requests for the purchasing of tooling, components, and services as required
  • Drive continuous improvement in supplier performance for quality, delivery and cost, leveraging Mercury’s Supplier Progress Review system
  • Respond to internal customer inquiries in a timely, accurate manner
  • Actively support the Category Team, proactively assisting in strategy development, execution, and communication

Project Management: (25%)

Manage projects in a collaborative, thorough, and detail-oriented manner to ensure that quality, cost, and timing deliverables are met or exceeded. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Conduct or lead cost and risk analyses
  • Utilize effective project management tools to ensure timely delivery of responsibilities
  • Manage changes as required, Mercury or supplier driven, with effective communication and execution via Mercury’s change management processes
  • Communicate, align, and monitor project schedules with suppliers and internal stakeholders to manage risk and ensure on-time execution

Financial Planning and Cost Analysis: (15%)       

Perform detailed cost analysis of supplier proposals, including comparisons with “should cost” modeling or other industry benchmarking tools. Lead the tooling management process for assigned components to ensure quality of the product being delivered is sustained.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of cost information provided by suppliers to ensure accuracy and reasonableness, aligned with industry costs and per contractual terms and conditions, and through creation of discrete cost models as required
  • Thoroughly evaluate all component and capital cost changes to ensure Mercury’s cost position is protected and all changes are substantiated and reasonable
  • Facilitate internal and external reviews of component tooling and investment requirements
  • Understand drivers of cost variance and ensure alignment with approved changes
  • Maintain thorough understanding of costs and changes throughout the year, enabling an accurate reporting of standard costs during the annual review process

Cross Functional Collaboration: (25%)

Facilitate close communication related to the procurement process to all other functions within the organization including engineering, operations, and finance. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, credibility, and trust to enable proactive communications and build stakeholder trust
  • Participate in the decisions being made as part of the team discussions
  • Support and participate in cross functional discussions in communications with the suppliers
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships, to include technical support that ensures proactive discussion and communication of current concerns and emerging issues across all stakeholders
  • Collaborate with the category leader to develop, align, communicate, and champion strategies

Continuous Process Improvement: (5%)

Utilize Lean Six Sigma continuous improvement methodologies to drive improvements in processes, supplier performance, and attainment of strategic goals.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively manage projects necessary to execute continuous improvement plans in accordance with the category strategy

Job Competency Requirements

Experience / Professional Credentials:

  • 10+ years of experience in supply chain management or engineering
  • CPSM and CPIM certification preferred
  • Lean Six Sigma Green Belt preferred

Education:

  • BS/BA in Engineering or a closely related field is required
  • MBA is preferred

Business Travel Expectations

  • This position will require occasional day and/or overnight travel by auto or airplane, up to 15%.
