The Boeing Company Maui Site, is seeking a Senior Optical Engineer (Level 4) to design, integrate and maintain optical systems at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex in Kihei, HI. supporting the development, integration, testing, operations, and maintenance of electro-optical systems for the Research Advance Space Superiority Technology and Engineering (RASTER) Program.  This position will work alongside optical, mechanical, electrical, and other systems engineers in coordination with the customer to establish requirements, design, procure, assemble, test and maintain various electro-optical systems such as lasers, telescopes, visible and infrared sensor systems. Additionally this position will be responsible for supporting large industrial systems projects including hydraulics, lifting equipment, and facility support equipment.  This position is located at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex (MSSC) in Haleakala, Hawaii.

The highly skilled Senior Optical Engineer would work as part of a multi-disciplinary team supporting the development of both directed energy and electro-optical systems. Work with systems engineers, mechanical engineers, electrical engineers, and the customer to establish requirements, and design, procure, assemble, test and maintain various optical systems such as telescope, laser, adaptive optics, and visible and infrared sensor systems. The Senior Optical Engineer will be located at the Maui Space Surveillance Complex in Haleakala, HI.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Work with lead optical engineer, systems engineer and the Air Force customer to establish requirements, design, procure, assemble, test and maintain various optical and electro-optical systems such as lenses, telescopes, visible and infrared sensor systems.

  • Works with optical team to integrate, align, operate, and maintain visible and invisible sensors, laser, telescopes, and other optical systems.

  • Develops and validates requirements for various optical systems.

  • Develops architectures to integrate complex optical systems and components into higher level systems and platforms.

  • Manages appropriate aspects of critical supplier and partner performance to ensure compliance to requirements.

This position requires an active SECRET U.S. Security Clearance. (A U.S. Security Clearance that has been active in the past 24 months is considered active.). This position is contingent on clearance verification and customer concurrence.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills and Experience):

  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry.

  • 5 or more years of experience with optical alignment techniques.

  • 5 or more years of experience working with optics, including lasers (CW, Pulse), optical alignment, opto-mechanical, and optical metrology .

  • 3 or more years of experience in optical design and analysis using Zemax, CodeV or an equivalent software design package.

  • Ability to work above 10,000 feet ASL is required.

Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):

  • Demonstrated industry experience designing and analyzing optical components and systems using software like Zemax Optics Studio or Code V, and FRED straylight analysis

  • Demonstrated hands on hardware experience with optical components and sensors to include cleanroom practices and handling of electro-static sensitive devices.

  • Experience cleaning optical elements strongly desired.

  • Experience with stripping optical mirrors desired

  • Experience with telescopes strongly desired

  • Willingness and demonstrated ability to perform high-quality documentation is highly desirable.

Typical Education & Experience:

Degree and typical experience in engineering classification: Bachelor's and 9 or more years' experience, Master's with 7 or more years' experience or PhD with 4 or more years' experience. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Relocation:
