Cox Communications is searching for a Senior Operations Optical Engineer who has a background in Optical/DWDM/Transport technologies, someone with great problem-solving skills and the ability to work well with our customers and boundary partners. We are a highly collaborative, diverse, and talented team that works in an agile environment with many of the latest technologies in the industry. Your role on the Backbone TFO (Integration) team will be to provide operational design consultation in the engineering process, production trials, infrastructure life cycle deployments as well as operational escalation support for the National Backbone. You will contribute to the reliability, performance, scalability, quality, and availability of the Backbone Network with a primary focus on design projects, new deployments, and service integrations.
Perform operations engineering activities with specific knowledge and skills associated with the following technologies: Optical Transport Platforms; Active Ethernet solutions; OTN and OLS Optical Transport Platforms; Coarse and Dense Wave Division Multiplexing (CWDM/DWDM) platforms, both active and passive (ROADM/FOADM); Network Management Systems (NMS); Performance Monitoring, and test platforms; Optical and Ethernet Solutions; Network Synchronization and Timing Systems, and Digital Video Transport.
Primary Responsibilities and Essential Functions: (WHAT YOU’LL DO):
• Optical Transport background and experience (Nokia OLS/RLS, Ciena OTN, Optical RAODM/FOADM, DWDM/CWDM, CDF-C, EDFA, RAMAN, Fiber Characterization, OSC) or other comparable DWDM platforms • Experience in deployment and troubleshooting of Optical Transport technologies
• Develop and author detailed and efficient Methods of Procedures (MOP), Engineering Work Packages (EWP), Statements of Work (SOW), and Installation Request Forms (IRF) with a focus on minimal to no impact to production services.
• Performs Tier 3 level troubleshooting requiring the ability to perform complex network fault isolation and, as a subject matter expert, is able clear the majority of network events.
• Provides on-site and/or remote technical support for all Cox transmission media.
• Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of network platforms, ensuring network uptime and compliance with customer Service Level Agreements.
• Remains accountable for coordinating solutions with vendors on chronic equipment or operating system issues that impact the data network infrastructure, ensuring uninterrupted service and support to customers.
• Remains accountable for reporting, tracking, and trending on specific vendor equipment and operating system issues.
• Oversees and performs the implementation of network changes for configuration and capacity.
• Assumes responsibility for day-to-day platform reliability, capacity maintenance and monitoring, and network augmentation
• Partners with change management for impact identification, network validation, MOP and Work Package creation, and execution of activities.
• Performs real-time problem management, including coordinating customer calls, problem escalation to vendors, reporting serious problems to management, and tracking and follow-up.
• Facilitate compliance with guidelines from internal and external governing entities, audits these processes to ensure efficiency and cost effectiveness.
• Develops and distributes routine and ad hoc reports to management and field personnel to support service delivery.
• Develops and contributes to the production of reports and postmortems on network events and outages in the Cox network.
• Manages projects related to multi-customer software issues/upgrades, equipment upgrades, and/or configuration changes.
• Coordinate solutions with vendors and field personnel for equipment or operating system issues.
• Travels as necessary to support other locations or deployment initiatives.
• Makes specific recommendations and assists in the implementation of plans that enhance technical operation, remain in compliance with rules and regulations, and permit the deployment of new technology.
Qualifications:
Minimum: (WHO YOU ARE):
• Typically requires a BS/BA in related discipline (i.e., Electrical Engineering, Computer Information Systems, Management Information Systems) and 5-8 years of experience in related field (i.e., networking) OR MS/MA and 3-5 years of experience in related field. Will consider additional industry experience in lieu of degree. • Industry certifications such as OC-A, OC-P, OC-C, Nokia, or other applicable optical certifications
• Expert in Optical RAODM/FOADM, DWDM/CWDM, CDF-C, EDFA, RAMAN, Fiber Characterization, OSC
• Extensive knowledge and operational experience in performance, fault, and configuration management
• Extensive knowledge with troubleshooting and diagnostics
• Experience with production changes in a backbone DWDM environment
• Experience with testing traffic flows and protocols in a lab environment
• Experience with physical technology upgrades (upgrading chassis, line cards, software, hardware, etc.)
• Experience leading projects to enhance network capability for existing and future services
• Working knowledge of IP networks
Preferred:
• Experience with one or more of the following languages for automating network changes: Ansible, Python, Linux/Unix, Scripting, or other programming languages.
• Technical experience with application development, development languages, toolsets, and methodologies.
