Job Description

The Senior Engineer, Modeling and Simulation is responsible for developing and applying advanced finite element methods to complex problems in the research and design of breakthrough Packaging technologies for next generation beverage portfolio. The role will include developing key intellectual property and fundamental knowledge based on material structure-property and process relationships to enable packaging technology platforms that drive broad application across the product portfolio and provide the Coca-Cola system with a sustainable competitive advantage.

Additionally, the successful candidate will work with cross-functional global / regional development teams, as well as leveraging leading universities and external laboratories, to identify innovative and differentiated packaging technologies; design, prototype and assess (e.g., through virtual simulation, lab or pilot plant experimentation) technologies and engineering concepts to product and process specifications (e.g., functionality and operational feasibility), as well as develop value chain and economic feasibility analysis for candidate technologies; and work with internal or external partner(s) to secure and develop (novel) advanced simulation methods, processes, or equipment in order to refine technology concepts.

What You’ll Do:

Design, prototype & assess (e.g., through pilot plant testing and validation) packaging technologies and concepts to product and process specifications (e.g., functionality and operational feasibility), as well as develop value chain and economic feasibility analysis for candidate packaging solutions.

Develop strategic packaging technology platforms and make recommendations to Company management (e.g., senior technical management) about emerging packaging trends & opportunities, technology capabilities or scientific breakthroughs to support the Company's strategic direction.

Develop key intellectual property positions and fundamental knowledge based on material structure, property and process relationships to enable packaging technology platforms that drive broad application across the product portfolio and provide The Coca-Cola system with a sustainable competitive advantage.

Develop and implement innovative systems and procedures that allow optimization in all phases of the process design and development process.

Drive business growth by working in cross-functional teams, as well as leveraging leading suppliers and external laboratories, to identify innovative and differentiated packaging processes technologies.

Work with internal or external partner(s) to secure and develop (novel) advanced methods, processes, or equipment in order to refine concepts; develop & design prototypes and operating parameters, and produce cost estimates.

Plan, execute and document experimental trials; validate through designed experiments to ensure products / process can be successfully executed / implemented in The Coca-Cola System.  Conduct evaluations and provide comprehensive analysis and reports on new processes and technologies.

Communicate and gain alignment with internal stakeholders for projects to ensure research and development programs are successfully exploited by the Coca-Cola System.

Protect information and materials provided to third parties (e.g., consultants, vendors, suppliers, bottlers) by ensuring appropriate procedures are followed and parties are bound by Company confidentiality agreements as necessary.

Act as technical expert by responding to targeted questions from the field or other departments/business units and providing support to branches, bottlers and customers.

Present, train and develop field teams (Group, BU and bottlers) in conventional and emerging technologies. Facilitate trouble shooting and optimization of existing processes.

What You'll Need:

Masters or PHD (preferred) in Applied Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and/or Materials Science & Materials Engineering

A minimum of 5-10+ years’ experience working in numerical & FEA methods applied to polymer R&D and commercialization in areas of fluid/melt dynamics, materials forming/processing, chemistry, and characterization

Knowledge of design & analysis of processes and structures, including nonlinear materials

Ability to develop and apply numerical & FEA methods, develop custom subroutines, and thorough knowledge of the usage and inner workings of finite element methods, including commercial code ABAQUS and the like

Strong knowledge of material & polymer physics, structure, and property relationships, application/forming for rigid plastic packaging (ie. extrusion, coating, injection molding and stretch blow molding), and computational fluid dynamics

Experienced in conducting & driving R&D within a business environment and communication to non-technical senior managers

Experience envisioning and creating physical experiments to validate simulations
