Job Description

Job Purpose:

The Senior Material Development Scientist is responsible for working cross functionally with Commercial Buyers, Suppliers, Product Development and Supply to identify new ingredient opportunities for the business that are critical to delivering a specified product design. This role is responsible for driving these ingredients through the qualification and approval process ensuring that they are properly assessed regarding any risks to animal well-being or product quality. They will also develop ingredient Specifications which includes identifying the key ingredient attributes to be included on that Specification. 

What are we looking for?

Minimum Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Science, Food Science, Food Technologist or similar
  • 4+ years R&D experience with established technical ingredient expertise
  • Previous experience with ingredients for human or animal consumption.
  • Strong understanding of the raw material supply chain within the industry

Strongly Preferred Qualifications:

  • Masters or PHD in Science, Food Science, Food Technologist or similar
  • 10+ years R&D experience with established technical ingredient expertise
  • Previous food or pet food experience

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Collaborating with industry suppliers and commercial buyers to identify new ingredient opportunities and enhance current ingredients to meet the needs for product design, cost savings and ingredient safety and quality
  • Identifying and assessing new and existing ingredients for known hazards and ensuring there are controls implemented to minimize the risk of those hazards to ensure production of safe, high quality, nutritious products across multiple production technologies
  • Utilize understanding and knowledge linked to the raw material ingredient portfolio across all relevant applications and be key technical point of contact within business
  • Leverage knowledge of ingredients to help set strategy and identify ways to enhance key product attributes and potential savings
  • Ensure new ingredient opportunities are aligned with relevant stakeholders within the R&D function and external to R&D
