Summary

This is a fixed term contract due to end when the previous employee returns from maternity leave.  At this point we cannot confirm exactly how long this contract will last, but it is unlikely to be later than 28th May 2023  .

We’re looking for someone with marketing and communications experience to join the West Yorkshire Group as maternity cover to help share our work in the countryside and wider landscape. We’re delivering a number of important habitat restoration projects in partnership with other landowners and environmental NGOs and we’re seeking someone who can tell the story of this important work. 

 Alongside our major project work, our dedicated ranger team manage some of West Yorkshire’s most beautiful places, working with volunteers and local communities to look after diverse habitats; from protected blanket bog and internationally important grasslands to semi-ancient woodlands and beautiful gardens. We are seeking maternity cover for our Senior Marketing and Communications Officer who can help share this vital work with local communities, partners and everyone who enjoys our special places. 

 

You’ll be working with the Countryside and Partnership Manager, Land Outdoors and Nature Project Manager, as well as regional consultancy colleagues and members of the wider countryside team, who all have a shared passion for the work of the National Trust. You’ll use your specialist knowledge, skills and experience to create content that can be shared both internally and externally.

 

The role will work with key partners to make a significant positive difference to how we communicate about our Land, Outdoors and Nature work in the North of England and beyond.

What it's like to work here

Marsden Moor: Marsden Moor Estate comprises 2,301 hectares of moorland. The estate is situated at the head of the Colne Valley in West Yorkshire and encompasses the northerly most part of the Peak District National Park. The majority of the estate now subject to HLS agreements with Natural England and the grazing commoners. Marsden Moor is a landscape steeped in history, from prehistoric man to historic trans-Pennine transport routes.

 

Hardcastle Crags: Beautiful wooded valley with 19th-century Gibson Mill at its heart. A beauty spot of the South Pennines with more than 160 hectares of unspoilt woodland and internationally important hay meadows/permanent pastures for grassland fungi. As well as being the home of the northern hairy wood ant, there are tumbling streams, glorious waterfalls and stacks of millstone grit, all crisscrossed by more than 15 miles of footpaths.

The wider landscape you will be working across includes land owned by Yorkshire Water and stretches from National Trust owned Marsden Moor in the Peak District to the wonderful Calder Valley hosting Hardcastle Crags, the largest clough woodland in the South Pennines.

What you'll be doing

Over the next 12 months, the role will focus on shining a light on our projects, including our grassland fungi project, moorland restoration and natural flood management. The role is varied; you could be photographing fungi, planning press coverage of landscape-scale projects, or dealing with crisis communications events, such as moorland fires. We need somebody flexible to support our team across a range of land, outdoors and nature work.

 

Could you be our storyteller? We want someone who will find the news hook, seek out the photo opportunity, and help demonstrate how our work will help benefit the local community. Doing this, you’ll secure press coverage and create digital content (web, social media and video) and internal communications coverage about our habitat restoration work, as well as work with our partners to reach a wider audience through their channels. You’ll help bring the best out of the countryside team, sharing their passions and encouraging them to be our spokespeople. There’s never been a more exciting time to inspire our audience about our work to restore habitats, protect nature and heal climate harm.

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for someone with creative flair, excellent written skills and an eye for a great image or video content. Ideally, you’ll have experience of working in the conservation or heritage industry, or a good understanding of countryside and conservation communications.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Practical experience in a marketing and communications role, with particular PR or digital focus
  • Experience of developing and implementing marketing and communications plans
  • Proven track record in creating, using and editing content in different channels (web, social media, PR, email), ideally with experience of creating video content
  • Knowledge of relevant legislation: marketing codes, data protection, copyright and model release
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to spot potential risks to reputation and escalate them accordingly
  • Have excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to influence, advise and negotiate at all levels within the organisation and with external agencies
  • Well organised and able to manage multiple priorities and varying pressures to meet measurable targets and deadlines
  • Strong understanding of the importance of online presence and ways to promote visits to our website and social media channels
  • Can take a flexible approach to work
