  Do you have boundless energy and passion for engineering data used to solve dynamic problems that will shape the future of retail? With the sheer scale of Walmart’s environment comes the biggest of big data sets. As a Walmart Data Engineer, you will dig into our mammoth scale of data to help unleash the power of retail data science by imagining, developing, and maintaining data pipelines that our Data Scientists and Analysts can rely on.  You will be responsible for contributing to an orchestration layer of complex data transformations, refining raw data from source into targeted, valuable data assets for consumption in a governed way. You will partner with Data Scientists, Analysts, other engineers and business stakeholders to solve complex and exciting challenges so that we can build out capabilities that evolve the retail business model while making a positive impact on our customers’ lives.

Our organization focuses on managing and delivering world-class data assets, including creating and maintaining data standards, driving policy compliance, creating partnerships, and developing pipelines and self-service tools. Data Ventures exists to unlock the full value of Walmart’s data by developing and productizing B2B data initiatives that empower merchants and suppliers to make better, faster decisions for the business.  As part of this transformation, we’re seeking entrepreneurial individuals to help drive data productization from concept to deployment. 

What you’ll do…

As a Sr Manager of Software Engineer I

  • Hands on leader with proficient in Software Application Development and lifecycle.
  • Manage software development engineers and lead engineering projects
  • In-depth knowledge of technologies such as:
    • Docker
    • Kubernetes
    • Nodejs (Apollo server) - Backend
    • ReactJS (UI with Apollo client & Material UI)
    • Graph-QL API's
    • Azure & GCP Cloud Services
    • Java Spring Boot services
    • Jest / Storybook framework for writing test cases
    • Jenkins Pipelines
    • GitHub
    • Unix Scripting
    • Event driven design
    • Messaging Technologies
    • SonarQube 
  • Engage in technical design and discussions and help drive technical architecture
  • Ensure the happiness and productivity of the team’s software engineers
  • Help mitigate risk (technical, product, personnel)
  • Provide guidance and influence in other areas of the Engineering (e.g. DevOps and Test Engineering)
  • Communicate the vision of our product to external entities
  • Participate in relevant Engineering and Technical Operations workgroups and on-call rotations to assure service availability
  • Foster, enable and promote innovation
  • Define team metrics and meet productivity goals of the organization
  • Mentor software engineers through their career growth
  • You’re experienced leading teams and implementing technology globally
  • Comfortable influencing others, leading team, managing stakeholders, getting buy-in from leadership, and communicating clearly
  • You’re stimulated by challenges and are ready to engage at Fortune 1 scale
  • Having good people management skills and a client service mentality is a must.  Essentially, this is a mix between being a technical manager and a relationship manager.
  • You will help give architecture guidance as well. 
  • Having several years of management experience of a tech team is helpful, but any management experience will do, as well as a solid knowledge base of process.
  • Be able to build relationships with other areas of the business (Product, UX, Ops) and partner with them to build technical solutions for our Associates and Members.
  • Ensure Software Quality Engineering by keeping the engineers up to date on best practices, automated code testing, alerts, reporting, and taking a proactive approach to production running app support.
  • Work closely with the Program and Product Manager to ensure engineering work is pointed and prioritized correctly.

What you’ll bring…

Must Have:

  • Strong experience managing and leading a software development
  • 2+ years of managing people directly
  • 4+ years of professional experience with Node.js development.
  • Experience leading a team of engineers through various projects at a given time.
  • Expert with Java/J2EE stack
  • Strong interpersonal skills that allow you to effectively solve problems and work through production issues.
  • Experience building and retaining high performance teams and leading global software engineering product teams.
  • Proven ability to earn respect, trust and influence from people you work with and to mentor top technical talent.
  • Technical leadership experience in design, implementation, and support of core database services that are highly reliable, flexible, and scalable.

Minimum Qualifications...

engineering or related field.

1 year’s supervisory experience.
