Bechtel is seeking an Engineering Geologist or Geological Engineer for the team based in Reston, Virginia. This role is responsible for leading and supporting engineering geology activities (site investigations, geologic and engineering studies/rock mechanics/engineering geology) for multiple studies/proposals/projects. The successful candidate will be asked to support projects executed by the Infrastructure GBU (rail, airports, fossil and renewable power), Energy GBU (LNG facilities, oil refineries, and other chemical facilities), Mining & Metals (raw materials), and Nuclear, Security & Environmental GBU (nuclear power, government services). The position will be part of the Geotechnical & Hydraulic Engineering Services (G&HES) group.
Job Responsibilities:
Evaluate sites for potential geohazards (rockfalls/slides, seismic ground movement, seismogenic and non-seismogenic faulting, karst ground, voids/cavities, etc.).
Develops and directs detailed field investigations
Evaluate stability requirements for rock excavations.
Provide technical support on tunneling construction and conceptual design.
Provide expertise on active fault characterization.
Develop and update design guides and specifications.
Conduct constructability assessments and geohazard safety issues.
Provide expertise in groundwater characterization and modeling.
Prepare geotechnical design basis reports.
Plan, coordinate and prepare specifications, bid evaluations and award recommendations for subsurface exploration and material subcontractors.
Work will require travel to project sites on short- and long-term assignments. Travel may also be required to other Bechtel offices and job sites in and outside of North America.
Fieldwork may be required in challenging locations (e.g. extreme weather conditions and remote locations).
Basic Qualifications:
Grade 25: An M.S. Degree in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering, with a minimum of 5 years of working experience in that field with a Ph.D. in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering and a minimum of 3 years of experience is needed. Professional registration is required.
Grade 26: An M.S. Degree in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering, with a minimum of 8 years of working experience in that field with a Ph.D. in Engineering Geology or Geological Engineering and a minimum of 6 years of experience is needed. Professional registration is required.
Proficiency with computer applications such as (or equivalent to) Rocscience suite of software, Modflow, Global Mapper, and finite-element modeling of rock excavations.
Must demonstrate strong verbal and written skills in English to communicate with the team in preparation of reports, memos, calculations, specifications and other forms of documentation. Must be familiar with word processing, spreadsheet, and database applications.
