There’s more to it than tubes, roads, buildings and bridges. This is about connecting communities and creating opportunities, so we’re ready for the 21st century and beyond.

Business Engineers within TfL lead and deliver multidisciplinary professional engineering in projects, typically in the early phases of the lifecycle. This includes understanding stakeholder needs, the business case, mitigating risks, establishing feasibility, developing prototype solutions and setting technical requirements for delivering well defined business outcomes.

Initially, you’ll be working with the Maintenance Modernisation programme, providing engineering leadership and support to various initiatives and business activities. Working collaboratively, you will help to enable efficiency savings or value added benefit in a number of areas, including; changes to engineering standards and the application of existing and revised engineering standards, development of a data-driven maintenance organisation encompassing effective and efficient use of asset information, optimised maintenance regimes with better phasing/scope of renewals and heavy maintenance interventions and the identification of opportunities for LU APCD to modernise its business through the application of technology and adoption of innovation, from both rail and wider industries.

Knowledge

  • Good understanding of the different engineering disciplines deployed in transport and how they can be brought together appropriately in projects and programmes to solve client problems (Essential)

  • Good understanding of the delivery of projects at an early stage including a thorough knowledge of Business case development and whole life costing principles (Essential)

  • Knowledge of the strategic needs of TfL, its context and the priorities and ambition of its leaders (Desirable)

  • Commercial awareness, understanding of business cases, monetisation models, whole life cost, supply chains, procurement strategies and how to get best value for TfL (Desirable)

Skills

  • Ability to communicate complex engineering concepts to non-expert audiences at all levels of the business (Essential)

  • Ability to effectively engage with, manage and influence stakeholders (Essential)

  • Ability to identify and evaluate options, including cost and timescale implications (Essential)

  • Ability to think strategically and make connections across the business (Essential)

Experience

  • Experience of early stage project delivery in transport (Essential)

  • Experience of working with stakeholders in major transport projects, including management of complex interfaces (Essential)

  • Experience of delivering early stage projects where there is client uncertainty (Essential)

It’s important you bring a passion for the TfL Vision and strategy too. That’s because, wherever you join us, you’ll explore work of unparalleled scale, scope and variety across a unique range of projects, as you build your career and expertise. So come and bring on tomorrow, as an Engineer at TfL.

We are committed to equality, diversity and inclusion. We want to represent the city we serve, which will help us become a more innovative and efficient organisation. Our goal is to make our recruitment as inclusive as possible. We are a disability confident employer who guarantee an interview to any disabled candidate who meets all of the essential criteria.
