Sr. Director of Supplier Integration provides strategic and tactical leadership and direction to the organization (globally) by overseeing the various Supplier Integration activities relating to:  strategy development and deployment, advanced quality planning to support High Performance Product Development (HPPD) process, supplier development activities, containment, corrective and preventive actions, and reporting to maintain and improve customer satisfaction, eliminate errors and improve efficiency.  Also provide leadership in key adjacent areas such as product safety and recall decision making (via Mercury Product Performance Committee), overall quality and reliability for Mercury Marine through leadership role in Extreme Reliability initiative, and leadership of ISO 9001 certification activities for the Mercury Division.

As a result, Mercury Marine depends on the Sr. Director of Supplier Integration to be fully engaged with internal customers, Brunswick Corp., the global supply base and key external customer elements to ensure the following:

Direct purchased materials meet all performance specification requirements and do so over time to eliminate line downs, recalls, or other quality failures resulting in customer dissatisfaction. Quality for supplied products on new and current product programs is assured and maintained, thus preserving and protecting brand image Strategic quality systems and practices are conforming to international standards and can be independently certified as such. The Supplier Integration function is a key element in construction and execution of the Mercury Procurement Strategy and Mercury Brand Pillars (Extreme Reliability) A robust and documented process is in place to identify and remedy actual or potential product safety issues, and that process is in alignment with Mercury and Brunswick Legal Strategic Support of Mercury Brand Pillars. Field quality issues are identified and analyzed, and activities are under way to mitigate and eliminate risks to brand image from quality and reliability issues.

Job Accountabilities and Performance Criteria

Strategic Quality Leadership: 50%

Develop and globally deploy corporate supplier quality strategy in conjunction with Procurement Strategy and Mercury Brand Pillars. Passionately lead fellow employees by communicating the vision, engaging employees and empowering them to become change agents who are prepared and able to successfully lead the organization forward to embrace the future. Take decisive actions to push upwards in the organization through engaging the Senior Staff via activities like the Quality Operating Committee and Product Performance Committee. Maintain effective business communications and relationships with suppliers and internal customers to understand any quality impacts to production to proactively disseminate relevant information to all stakeholders and meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Develop and deploy a prevention-oriented set of quality guiding principles and specific tactical activities for global deployment
  • Deconstruct performance failings and develop strategies and tactics to overcome weaknesses
  • Develop overall quality strategies in a cross-functional manner while ensuring buy-in from other global organizational areas
  • Focus on people and inspire trust by not just doing things right, but by doing the right things
  • Provide employees with performance and development assessments that provide definition to their purpose, nurture their skills, develop their talent and reward results
  • Inspire and motivate people by living out the organization’s vision in their everyday business encounters

Financial Performance Support:  20%

Support Mercury Marine and Brunswick financial performance through effective control of supplier quality for a Purchasing spend that is near $1 billion (approx. 70% of cost content of Mercury products). There is significant financial risk to Mercury, both direct (rework, warranty, recall) and indirect (brand image, lost sales, lost market share) if the critical Supplier Quality function is not effectively planned and executed. A significant field campaign to mitigate a supplier quality issue can easily cost $1 million or more. Also support and lead Extreme Reliability activities at Mercury Marine, which will ensure remediation of field quality issues and preserve Mercury brand image. Independently, and in collaboration with assigned suppliers within the global supply base, process and execute quality activities.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Act as leader and change agent for quality on a global level, while being recognized as the “go to” person for strategic quality leadership
  • Serve as a consultative resource and collaborative partner to both customers and suppliers to ensure all needs and expectations are understood and addressed
  • Develop strategies to attack high cost issues within the warranty and design universes
  • Develop and deploy creative and effective tactics to minimize risk of line stoppages and associated lost labor and product availability if/when supplier quality failures occur
  • Effectively coordinate new product introduction supplier quality activities including prioritization of work, supplier assessments/audits, PPAP, FMEA, etc.
  • Management of the containment and remediation process if supplier quality issues occur
  • Review Corrective Action submissions to verify root cause analysis is complete and measures are taken to eliminate future reoccurrence, as needed
  • Respond to customer inquiries in a timely, accurate and consultative manner

Supplier Relationship Management: 10%

Lead the Supplier Quality Team in the quality aspects of Supplier Relationship Management by establishing and executing strategic quality initiatives, fostering effective business communications/relationships with suppliers and effectively measuring supplier performance to encourage less variation in vital process inputs. Support ongoing production to meet customer expectations and business requirements.  Develop and maintain strong relationships with key supplier leaders. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Rationalize the supply base to include family/supplier segmentation to understand the overall quality impact of suppliers while ensuring supplier quality development efforts are targeting those areas needing improvement
    • Provide quality performance data as required to enable the assessment of past performance, ensure continued efficiency and identify continuous improvement opportunities
    • Identify “At-Risk” suppliers and employ quality strategies with them to prevent production of defective products
  • Manage suppliers which includes:
    • A well-defined strategic supplier quality development process in conjunction with commodity and supplier plans
    • An effective supplier performance and review process
  • Manage the supplier relationship which includes:
    • Information sharing and transparency
    • Trust building
    • Equitable joint efforts – collaboration and mutual trust
  • Measure and Manage Supplier Performance through the use of supplier scorecard and internal balanced scorecard approach

Project Management: 10%

Provide strategic leadership and direction to staff of Supplier Quality Project Managers. Develop and deploy project management strategies globally to support the overarching programs and goals of Mercury Marine. This applies both to systems and product programs. Facilitate close communication regarding program/project tasks related to the Supplier Quality process and High Performance Product Development (HPPD) requirements to all project members, identify opportunities or threats to project deliverables and coordinate Supplier Quality risk mitigation strategy and implementation plans. Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Develop and deploy project management strategy to support overall programs
  • Play leadership role in evaluation and selection of suppliers for new product programs
  • Secure Mercury’s competitive advantage by protecting confidential information, as guided by a thorough understanding of with whom and when information may be shared
  • Demonstrate a high level of personal integrity, credibility and trust to enable proactive communications and build stakeholder trust
  • Develop and maintain effective business relationships to include technical support that ensure proactive discussion and communication of emerging issues and current concerns occur across all project stakeholders
  • Utilize various project management tools and templates to manage and communicate data related to supplier quality activities

Continuous Process Improvement: 10%

Support Lean Six Sigma activity. Independently and/or in collaboration with internal and external working partners, define, measure, analyze, improve and control processes, programs and supplier performance to effectively, efficiently and proactively achieve strategic business initiatives and/or key performance indicators.  Demonstrated behaviors should include the ability to effectively:

  • Manage projects necessary to execute continuous improvement plans in accordance with the commodity strategy

Job Competency Requirements

Experience / Professional Credentials:

  • 10 + years of experience in a strategic Engineering, Procurement, or Quality leadership role is required
  • Track record of documented successful performance
  • Experience in an executive level setting
  • ASQ certification(s) are preferred (Manager, Auditor, Engineer, Black Belt)
  • Lean Six Sigma certification, strongly preferred

Education Requirements:

  • Master's Degree in Engineering or a related technical field is required

Subject Matter Knowledge:

  • Extensive knowledge and experience in strategy development and deployment
  • Extensive knowledge of PPAP and APQP activity for both current and new product launches
  • Experience with auditing & ISO 9001 Quality Systems
  • Advanced problem solving skills & familiarity with DMAIC principles
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes such as casting, plastics, electrical, machining, assembly, and product testing

Business Travel Expectations

  • This position will require occasional day and/or overnight travel by auto or airplane, up to 20%.
