Job Description

As the UK’s most successful omni-channel retailer, ecommerce is a key part of our business - we run one of the busiest websites in the UK, driving a significant proportion of our sales. Our engineering practice includes 30+ teams, working on everything from Cloud platforms to mobile apps, from ecommerce functionality to machine learning.

This is an opportunity to work as a senior AWS Platform engineer on a cross-functional Agile development team. You will be working collaboratively with other highly skilled engineers creating infrastructure platforms that are used by the delivery teams building complex, mission critical applications. The team takes a “paved road” approach by offering default configurations, but also works with delivery teams to evolve the platform’s capabilities and to tailor needs to meet bespoke requirements.

What you'll be doing:

As a Senior Engineer you will have responsibility for the development approach and will strongly influence how the platform evolves to meet business needs. You will also use your knowledge of software engineering to support shaping of new projects and support the professional development of less experienced developers. You will work with a diverse range of technical and non-technical stakeholders which will require excellent communication skills.

Learning new skills is extremely important to us. Engineers are expected to continuously improve their skills and keep abreast of the latest technologies and techniques regardless of their experience or job grade. In return for this commitment you will be given the resources and support you need to help you with your learning journey.

Ideal candidates will have excellent software engineering skills with a track record of working in teams delivering flexible cloud based infrastructure solutions that are scalable, secure and performant. Successful candidates will have passion for using technology to deliver outstanding and innovative software solutions.

What you'll have:

  • Extensive Amazon Web Services (AWS) experience.

  • CI/CD tools and automation techniques, preferably using Jenkins.

  • Build tools like Gradle, Maven, Yarn, Npm.

  • Strong understanding of secure by design principles.

  • Docker and container orchestration using Kubernetes.

  • Operating high-volume critical production services.

  • Working with modern programming languages E.g. Groovy, Python, Java, etc.

  • Designing and operating highly available and fault tolerant platforms.

  • Configuration management tools.

  • Familiarity with Agile development methods such as Scrum or Kanban.

What else you could bring:

  • Working within agile development, technical service or IT Operations teams.

  • Working within a product centric team

  • Consistently demonstrating strong analytical and decision-making without losing sight of the big picture.

  • Adopting a logical and consistent approach to solving day-to-day problems.

  • Thinking creatively; applying solutions that will benefit customers in an innovative way.

  • Demonstrating the ability to constructively challenge and influence peers and senior stakeholders.

  • Working well in a team and is available and approachable to team members.

  • Recognised internally as a specialist in own area of expertise.

Additional Information:

We occasionally close vacancies early in the event that we receive a high volume of applications. Therefore we recommend you apply as soon as possible.

The application form consists of a CV upload, an online test followed by application questions. Please ensure you refresh the page each time you complete a task to ensure you complete everything that you need to in time.

We have a number of different ways to work flexibly so at your interview feel free to talk about what flexibility means to you. There are no guarantees, however, it may open the door to not only a new role but a new way of working.
