Job Description

At Bristol Myers Squibb, we are inspired by a single vision – transforming patients’ lives through science. In oncology, hematology, immunology and cardiovascular disease – and one of the most diverse and promising pipelines in the industry – each of our passionate colleagues contribute to innovations that drive meaningful change. We bring a human touch to every treatment we pioneer. Join us and make a difference.

Chemical Process Development (CPD) is a world-leading chemical development organization, located within GPS-Product Development, working to rapidly bring innovative medicines to patients. The Analytical function is seeking an innovative, impactful, and highly talented NMR spectroscopy specialist to join our Isolation and Structure Elucidation (ISE) team in New Brunswick, NJ.  This individual will apply their NMR expertise to problem-solve a variety of pharmaceutical challenges and provide unambiguous structural elucidation of small molecules.  Cross-functional collaboration and a mind-set of innovation and growth is critical.  Our department offers excellent opportunities to those who want to learn and grow their career while continuing to develop our shared culture of excellence.

As a member of the ISE team, the NMR Spectroscopy Specialist will have the opportunity to:

  • Impact the BMS development and commercial portfolio
  • Influence process and formulation development for small molecule and biologic therapeutics
  • Continued technical development through the application of high-field NMR for the structure characterization of both known and unknown chemical entities
  • Be part of a collaborative team of highly skilled chemists to solve chemical structures using 1D and 2D multinuclear, solution-state NMR techniques on state-of-the-art, high-field NMRs (400-700 MHz) equipped with conventional and cryoprobe technology
  • Expand their technical knowledge and structure elucidation skills using high resolution MS and MS/MS

The successful candidate will also:

  • Utilize semi-preparative, chromatographic isolation of impurities and degradants to solve their chemical structures
  • Provide focused written communication and oral presentations that highlight the impact and innovation of their work
  • Have a passion for solving challenging analytical problems
  • Influence scientists and initiatives that improve efficiency, productivity, and evolution of the team’s structure elucidation capabilities
  • Collaborate with other subject matter experts by routinely engaging in active discussions
  • Deliver high quality data within timelines to continually develop project knowledge, meet project goals, and enable capabilities within the department

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in chemistry or a related discipline with 0-2 years of post-Ph.D. industrial or academic experience
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of NMR theory to solve chemical structures and interactions of small molecules
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret multinuclear 1D and 2D NMR data
  • Proficient oral and written communication skills, problem solving ability and leadership skills
  • Familiarity with semi-preparative isolation, LC-HRMS, MS/MS and other spectroscopic and chromatographic methods are desirable
  • Experience with troubleshooting NMR hardware and software (Bruker preferred) including magnets, consoles, conventional and cryo-probes, autosamplers and workstations (Windows and Linux) a plus
