Position Summary

Leads Discovery and Optimization (LDO) is a diverse group of scientists and engineers providing critical lead discovery, lead evaluation, and lead profiling data to improve the understanding and increase the speed of discovery of new therapeutics.  The Discovery Analytics Sciences team in LDO will help shape the future of how we advance molecules to the clinic through rigorous understanding of binding affinity and stoichiometry.  We are seeking a highly motivated and creative Scientist to develop innovative models and analytical tools to enable portfolio decisions by addressing key scientific questions. This individual will join a creative team and work closely with other bench scientists to develop and run biophysical assays for hit assessment, mechanism of inhibition, and protein characterization. This position will report to a senior member of the DAS group.  Join us as we transform the drug discovery process to enable rapid progression of medicines to patients.

Key Responsibilities

  • Formulate hypotheses and develop innovative methods to address scientific questions within Small Molecule Drug Discovery using Biophysical tools and analyses
  • Plan and carry out experimental studies, analyze and interpret data, and communicate conclusions with teams
  • Develop and run Surface Plasmon Resonance (SPR), Microscale Thermophoresis (MST), and other biophysical binding assays for characterization of protein/ligand and protein/protein interactions
  • Demonstrate solution binding of proteins with small molecule ligands and determine binding affinity and stoichiometry using microcalorimetry and related methods
  • Characterize protein structure, stability, and aggregation state, using technologies such as microcalorimetry, spectroscopy, light scattering, analytical ultracentrifugation, etc.
  • Use literature to solve basic scientific problems
  • Work under limited supervision, routinely troubleshoot problems, and identify and pursue new ideas and solutions
  • Participate on multidisciplinary project teams and make decisions that impact working groups and project teams
  • Communicate results written and verbally to drug discovery working groups, logically explain issues, and work to build alignment around complex situations
  • Maintain a complete and current Electronic Laboratory Notebook
  • Present work in departmental meetings and across research & early development organization
  • Present analyses and results to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Participate in evaluation of new technologies and instrumentation
  • May represent the department in interdepartmental forums and sub-teams
  • May act as a functional mentor to junior team members and contractors

Qualifications & Experience

  • PhD in Biochemistry, Biophysics, or related field with 1-3 years relevant experience or MS/BS with 4-6 years of experience, preferably in a Biotech, Pharma or Biopharma setting.
  • Thorough knowledge of quantitative analysis of protein-ligand interactions, robust method development and strong experience using either surface plasmon resonance (SPR) or microscale thermophoresis (MST) is necessary.
  • Familiarity with automation, electronic lab notebook and laboratory information management system (LIMS) systems is a plus.
  • Knowledge of principles of biophysical characterization of proteins such as oligomeric structure and stability using microcalorimetry, fluorescence or other spectroscopy, light scattering or other related technologies, TSA, or analytical ultracentrifugation would be advantageous.
  • Experience with protein analytical characterization techniques such as SDS-PAGE, analytical size exclusion chromatography (SEC), liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LC-MS) is a plus.
  • Experience with high throughput screening methods, and/or recombinant protein purification including method development, optimization and troubleshooting would be an advantage.
  • An interest in the drug discovery process is expected.
  • Excellent communication skills, evidence of innovative thinking, and ability to function at a high level in a matrixed environment are necessary, as is proficiency in scientific/technical writing (e.g., scientific reports, protocols).
