Amazon is seeking an experienced and technology oriented Controls System Dev Engineer for our Advanced Technology team in Milan Italy, to develop and implement best-in-class technologies within the EU Team of Robotics.
Successful candidates will have strong experience in designing, developing, installing, managing and maintaining automation systems used to monitor and control engineering systems, machinery and processes in our Amazon facilities. The successful individual must have experience using PLC, controls and software within the field of mechatronic systems. The role will require partnership with other Design and Innovation Engineers, Controls Engineers, Operations Engineers, Installation and Maintenance Specialists, Software Engineers, TPMs, Vendors and System Integrators to design and develop solutions for a variety of process, challenges and R&D prototypes such as high speed package sortation, robotic material handling, automated product identification, order consolidation, packaging and autonomous vehicles.
The focus of the role will include implementing in-field controls and integration, defined by the Development Engineers, connecting this with the upstream and downstream units and executing any needed troubleshooting. This engineer will work hand in hand with the application Hardware Engineers to execute the test-plan defined by the Product Leader, collecting and analyzing performance metrics, debugging PLC and software issues and sharing feedback from the field. Additionally the role will require developing large-scale control engineering projects and new products by developing control system design specifications and leveraging distributed application software.
This individual needs to be comfortable interfacing and driving various functional teams and individuals at all levels of the organization. Additionally, someone who demonstrates a Think Big mindset and has a high travel flexibility, to lead testing activities across all European Sites.

Work with internal Amazon teams and external vendors to deliver innovations within automation (controls and software scope) and technology developments for our CAPEX projects:
- design, develop, code and implement mechatronic control systems within the PLC, controls and software areas.
- Conduct multiple weekly standing meetings with internal teams and vendors to plan and track deliverables
-Deep dive on technical details and lead problem resolution when needed.
-Communicate project status in a way that drives and elevates decision making.
-Work in close collaboration with World Wide Engineering, working across multiple time zones.
-Coordinate information between various teams in the organization and work very closely with the Ops Engineering, Real Estate, IT, Software, RME and Operations.
-Role based in our Milan office, must be willing to relocate
-University Degree, B.S. or Master, in Mechatronics Robotics, Computer Science, Electrical or Mechanical Engineering (or science/technology)
-Proven technical experience in developing applications
-Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways
-Demonstrated ability to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs quickly, and can proficiently translate those needs into the right technology solution
-Able to provide the customer and company-wide perspective to detailed technical decisions
-Experience in IPC/PLC code development and installation of controls solutions, preferred platforms are AB and Siemens.
-Experience using SQL.
-Working experience using Linux or QNX platforms.
-Understanding of industrial networking (Profibus, ASi and Industrial Ethernet)
-Flexibility to travel up to 80% across Europe.
-Fluency in English required. A plus is speaking other EU languages
