Job Purpose and Impact

The Research Scientist will be part of a team using analytical and scientific expertise to address challenges in nourishing the world. In this role you will implement new analytical methods, perform chemical analysis, analyze and interpret data and communicate results to technical and non-technical audiences. The range of analytical challenges will cover a breadth of research questions, from shrimp feed to road salt, from no-calorie sweeteners to fractionated palm oil, and from rumen samples to cocoa powders. The primary area of study is food materials with a focus on proteins and lipids. Successful team members go beyond providing analytical data and are driven to help our clients use analytical information to solve problems.

Key Accountabilities

• Perform non-targeted LC-MS data analysis:
  1. Execute sample loading, processing and chromatographic/mass spectrometry trouble shooting.
  2. Curate hits automatically selected by software packages (e.g. Compound Discoverer, Proteome Discoverer)
  3. Identify which of the hits are 'real' (biologically or chemically plausible, statistically significant, relevant to the research question, etc.)
  4. Effectively communicate results to diverse scientific teams
• Stay current with business trends needs, conduct root cause analysis of business problems, set up and align appropriate study design, sample preparation, data collection, and data analysis methods, draw conclusionsand suggest changes or improvements.
• Prepare analytical samples, standards, and properly disposes of waste according to guidelines in a high safety-focused environment.
• Use a variety of laboratory instrumentation and complex analytical methods to isolate, identify and quantify components of biological matrices and other samples.
• Independently solve moderately complex issues with minimal supervision, while escalating more complex issues to appropriate staff.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in a related field or equivalent experience
• Minimum of two years of related work experience
• Proven working knowledge of non-targeted LC-MS data acquisition and analysis
• Strong background in organic chemistry and mass spectrometry
• Basic technical knowledge in analytical chemistry.
• Experience working in an analytical lab

Preferred Qualifications

• Background in chemical biology, molecular biology, data science, analytical or organic chemistry, or equivalent experience working at the interface between scientific disciplines
• Experience leveraging non-targeted LC-MS data to discover molecular signatures relating to the deeper nature behind business objectives, questions, and issues
• Experience with Compound Discoverer, Proteome Discoverer or similar data processing systems
• Must be able to move quickly between projects and enjoy learning new things
• Ability to act as a power-user with a variety of software packages and their advanced features
• Comfort and competence working in a wide range of sample types with corresponding needs in terms of sample handling and analytical approach
