Regional R&D Health, Safety & Environment Lead - Chicago, IL

Aligned to our non-negotiable commitment that Safety comes first at Mars, always, the Regional R&D - Health, Safety & Environment Lead role is responsible for the overall management and direction of HSE within R&D operations, including pilot plants in the respective region.

This position is accountable for ensuring region governance with respect to company and regulatory requirements around Occupational Health, Safety and Environment protection, ensuring regional plans are consistent with the global R&D HSE strategy and aligned to The Five Principles as well as minimizing the Company’s general liability and exposure to health, safety and environmental risks. 

What are we looking for?

• Bachelors degree in Safety or other Science field with emphasis in Safety
• 15+ years’ experience
• Experience working in R&D Environment
• Strong working knowledge of chemical safety
• CSP / CIH Certifications

What will be your key responsibilities?

• Responsible for the creation and deployment of the MW R&D HSE strategy and initiatives within R&D sites globally, communicating with a compelling vision
• Leads the global R&D HSE community and operates as member of the Mars Wrigley HSELT
• Supports the co-creation of the MW Global HSE strategy, representing R&D view and Inputs
• Influences R&D leadership, setting appropriate targets and regularly reviewing / reporting performance, driving a deep Integration of HSE into R&D operations
• Establishes adequate HSE resources and capabilities in R&D operations globally, providing functional leadership for HSE points of contact
• Provides functional / technical expertise for global product innovation or other global R&D projects
• Coordinates the creation of Safety Data Sheets where appropriate in partnership with R&D, SRA and Legal
• Establishes necessary testing and monitoring schemes to ensure and demonstrate effective controls preventing Associate exposure to hazardous chemicals in R&D operations
• Serves as technical expert in R&D (and Supply as appropriate) as it relates to specific functional topics (e.g., hazardous materials, industrial hygiene, toxicology, etc.)
• Ensures robust management systems are in place (or aligned with plant) in pilot plants and laboratories
• Conducts regular operational pilot plant assessments, validating site conditions reflect embedded HSE procedures
• Oversees incident response, investigation and corrective action implementation for all incidents occurring within R&D operations, including the escalation of SIFs / PSIFs
• Transfers HSE best practices across sites within and across regions, including the deployment of learnings from all applicable Mars incidents
