The QA Lead will be responsible for developing, implementing, and managing the laboratory instrument calibration, validation, and maintenance programs to meet good laboratory practices and quality systems requirements.

Core Responsibilities:

  • Ensure a safe lab environment.
  • Act as plant expert on equipment calibrations for the assigned laboratory instruments across the plant and assist in the development of calibration procedures.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continually improve a maintenance program for each assigned type of instrument to maintain at optimum performance level. 
  • Maintain calibration, maintenance, and repair documentation for each of 500+ instruments across the plant as specified by regulations or by in-house procedures.
  • Develop calibration KPIs.
  • Lead in Out-of-Specification, Deviation, and Out-of-Tolerance investigations generated by instrument calibration failures ensuring compliance to the quality management system, customer, and regulatory requirements.
  • Repair laboratory equipment and qualify the repairs to ensure it performs at established levels from the original qualification reports.  Purchase and maintain inventory of replacement parts. 
  • Direct workforce to perform all plant calibration to support the quality control and production laboratories.
  • Maintain and coordinate the instrumentation validation program for API instrumentation.
  • Act as backup for the batch record review process on all API and NF batches.
  • Maintain and track a listing of venders for providing NIST certification of equipment and a supply of certified reagents and equipment for calibration.
  • Provide assistance to audits for calibrations and qualifications regarding validation protocol as per customer, quality, and regulatory systems.
  • Revise and develop laboratory SOPs to stay current with scientific developments, customer, and business needs. 
  • Trend instrument data providing input to repairs, replacement, or obsolescence. 
  • Work with QA, QC, Production, Metrology and Validation experts to develop methodology and reduce cost of qualification.
  • Provide leadership to plant QA/QC on the purchase of major equipment for plant laboratories to include a review of operational cost, installation, and maintenance and the negotiation of pricing. 
  • Train other employees in the Calibration Group and at the site on the calibration and instrument established repair program.  Maintain appropriate training records.
  • Support Performance Management activities and provide ongoing personal development for direct reports.

Qualified candidates will have:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree (i.e., Engineering, Chemistry, Physics, Applied Mathematics, Statistics, etc.) or significant experience in metrology.
  • Five years’ experience working preferably in the food or pharmaceutical ingredients or products.
  • High Performance Liquid Chromatograph (HPLC) troubleshooting, calibration, qualification, and maintenance experience.
  • Instrument Validation (IQ/OQ/PQ) authoring and review experience.
  • Experienced with ISO, HACCP, Food Safety, and training.
  • Supervisory experience preferred. 
  • Familiar with Lean Six Sigma tools, a plus.
  • Strong written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to interact with all levels of the organization.
  • Strong computer skills with proven proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, Power Point, Electronic Documentation Systems and SAP a plus.
  • Ability to effectively supervise a variety of direct report’s assignments while simultaneously completing self-directed projects.
  • Available to work off shift and weekend hours as necessary.
