Our portfolio includes a diverse range of properties, including two significant houses, Chartwell & Quebec House, as well as the increasingly popular Emmetts Garden.

Hours: 37.50 hours per week

Salary: Â£28400 - £30000 per annum DOE

Contract: Permanent

What it's like to work here

Chartwell was the much-loved Churchill family home and the place from which Sir Winston drew inspiration from 1924 until the end of his life. Many of the rooms remain the same as when the Churchill family lived at Chartwell and today it is our job to share the stories of their lives here as well as care for this much-loved home and their cherished possessions. The team at Chartwell ensure that visitors have a great time at this property, from the house to the woodlands, and the gardens to the café, and create events to delve further into the life of Sir Winston Churchill.

We have a strong and experienced team of Welcome Assistants and Visitor Experience Managers, alongside hundreds of long-standing and dedicated volunteers. You will be joining a collaborative team of leaders who support each other and whose combined passion offers an exciting future for the portfolio.

You will also have oversight and support the Operations at Emmetts Garden (at least one day a week) and Quebec House, although will be primarily based at Chartwell.

What you'll be doing

You'll be in charge of leading the visitor welcome section of the property on a day-to-day basis, often taking on duty management. This includes opening the property to visitors, maximising income generation through admissions and membership recruitment alongside small on-site project fundraising. You'll manage the presentational standards, ensure great service for our visitors and maximise the financial success of the operations. You are the lead for visitor facing health and safety incidents and risk assessment reporting. As well as managing the visitor welcome side of the business you'll collaborate with conservation and visitor experiences colleagues to ensure Chartwell and the wider portfolio delivers high quality programmes and continually develops. You will work with the General Manager and leadership team in thinking long-term and planning for the future development of the portfolio, including feeding into small and large visitor infrastructure projects. You will lead on access improvements across the site and can help shape your role with your interests in mind.

Please also read the full role profile attached to this advert, as well as the additional recruitment pack information which provides an overview of the portfolio.

Who we're looking for

You'll be an individual that can balance the daily operational responsibility of running every aspect of the property with the longer-term planning for the future. We’d like to hear from you if you have/are:

  • Well organised and creative
  • Someone who enjoys a busy environment and talking to visitors
  • Commercially minded yet sympathetic to conservation requirements
  • A proven track record in managing, supporting and motivating a team to deliver key objectives.
  • A background in heritage, arts, museum, tourism, leisure, theatre or other audience/customer facing transferable experience

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
