We’re looking for a Project Officer to join our team working on the National Trust’s Historic Environment Record, the ‘Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record’ (HBSMR).
Working closely with external contractors, our HBSMR Lead and internal Archaeological Consultants across England, Wales and Northern Ireland, you’ll play a key role in delivering a step-change for the quality and completeness of our data for the historic environment across diverse landscapes, ensuring it accurately reflects the archaeological knowledge at our places.
Success in this role depends on technical proficiency with historic environment records and spatial data relating to the historic environment, as well as being highly organised, great with people, an inspiring communicator and taking a proactive and curious approach in everything that you do.
We’re bigger than you think, we’re more complicated than we appear and we’re larger scale than you’d imagine. We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, and we’ve got so much more we want to achieve. We’re for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We don’t want to stop at 5.5 million members and we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.
Our central head office Heelis, is situated in Swindon, Wiltshire. We're well placed, with ample parking nearby, a shopping outlet with plenty of options for places to eat, and the town centre only a 10 minute walk away. Alternatively you can enjoy our open plan atrium space for lunch times, with our internal café available every day.
The data in our Historic Buildings, Sites and Monuments Record (HBSMR), which includes over 90,000 records across three countries, is fundamental to our conservation work. You will play an important role in improving the quality of the data we hold – working with source material from archaeological fieldwork and landscape studies – and enhancing existing data through the acquisition and analysis of remote sensing data and historic mapping.
With support from our HBSMR lead, you will work closely with our Archaeologists and relevant external contractors, coordinating their input and drawing on their local knowledge to deliver great results which will support better decision-making, conservation practice, interpretation and engagement.
You will support others around the application of HBSMR data – for instance through the provision of training, or in the preparation of data for use by staff and volunteers as part of condition monitoring surveys.
You will be an advocate for the historic environment as a whole, and the importance of the HBSMR, communicating and presenting the results of your work to others.
Some travel to National Trust properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland may be required.
The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.
Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.
