Job Description

Summary

We’re looking for a Project Manager to join our team to help us deliver a step-change in the way we approach the care and conservation of our archaeological sites across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

Working closely with our National Archaeologist and with our teams of internal Archaeological Consultants, you’ll play a key role in setting us up for success with the right guidance, support, systems and advocacy – to enhance and expand our existing volunteer-led archaeology condition monitoring schemes (known as ‘HART’).  The work you’ll do will ensure we can plan and prioritise conservation need and support our ambitions to involve more people in our work.

What it's like to work here

We’re bigger than you think, we’re more complicated than we appear and we’re larger scale than you’d imagine. We look after over 90,000 recorded archaeological sites and monuments, across incredible historic landscapes and parts of nine World Heritage Sites. We’ve got passionate people in all our teams, including specialists in every field of our work with incredible knowledge and expertise, and we’ve got so much more we want to achieve relating to our twin purpose of caring for the nations heritage and landscapes, and making these accessible to all. We’re for ever, for everyone and we really mean that. We don’t want to stop at 5.5 million members and we want everyone to feel welcome and enjoy access to our places, so we need to reach new audiences in ways that are meaningful and relevant to them without losing the hearts and minds of those that are already with us.

What you'll be doing

As part of our Everyone Welcome ambition we want to actively involve more people in helping to look after our places and collections.  We have an incredible opportunity to do this through our archaeology, not just involving people in new discoveries, but as part of our core function to look after the heritage in our care for the benefit of the nation with volunteering which supports condition monitoring and conservation.

Your role will be to shape, and enable the delivery of, the future of ‘business as usual’ archaeology volunteering at the National Trust. You will pull together the range of existing approaches to volunteer-led condition monitoring; you’ll draw on learnings from similar work undertaken by colleagues in other areas of the Trust, such as nature conservation; and you will assess how we integrate digital approaches in condition monitoring.  You will work collaboratively with our Archaeology Consultants and Volunteering and Community Involvement specialists to develop the guidance and resources so our teams can deliver against a consistent national framework and clear processes, using our established volunteering infrastructure.  And you will ensure that any approach delivers the right data to support good decision-making through our Historic Environment Record database.

Where needed you will provide direct support to teams on the ground, assisting in planning and prioritising the rollout of volunteer-led condition monitoring at our places, and providing training and advocacy. You will help us find ways to celebrate and share the results of this work and the achievements of the teams delivering it on the ground, building a national community of archaeology practitioners and volunteers around condition monitoring.

Some travel to National Trust properties across England, Wales and Northern Ireland may be required.

Who we're looking for

Drawing on your knowledge of volunteering and archaeology, success in this role depends on being highly motivated and highly organised, a creative thinker skilled at bringing people together; a clear communicator with a proactive and curious approach in everything that you do.

  • Relevant experience in managing and working with volunteers
  • An understanding of archaeology, heritage management and historic environment data
  • Solid project management skills and experience
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to plan effectively, analyse and respond to data, and work under pressure
  • Strong written communication skills and the ability present information in an appealing way for different audiences; able to motivate and influence others.
  • Excellent people and influencing skills, enabling relationships to be built and maintained; comfortable at working with a wide variety of different types of people.

The package

The National Trust has the motto ‘For everyone, for ever’ at its heart. We’re working hard to create an inclusive culture, where everyone feels they belong. It’s important that our people reflect and represent the diversity of the communities and audiences we serve. We welcome and value difference, so when we say we’re for everyone, we want everyone to be welcome in our teams too.

Wherever you’re from, and whatever your background, we want to hear from you – and it doesn’t matter if you’re jam first, cream first, or even if you don’t like scones at all. Everyone is welcome.

Benefits for working at the National Trust include:

  • Flexible working whenever possible
  • Free parking at most locations
  • Free entry to our properties for you, a guest and your children (under 18)
  • Substantial pension scheme of up to 10% basic salary
