Internal Job Description:               Process Engineer

Summary of Position:

The Process Engineer 3rd Shift develops, establishes, updates, and maintains manufacturing equipment and processes necessary to meet Mercury’s Safety, Quality, Cost, Delivery and Productivity goals.  This position utilizes Lean Manufacturing principles, processes, methodologies, and tools to support operational objectives and provide organizational agility.  The Process Engineer identifies, defines, and implements systematic improvements that promote and sustain the overall business strategies and initiatives.  The Process Engineer engages with multiple levels of cross-functional personnel to achieve objectives. 

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Review production schedules, engineering specifications, process flows and other information to understand the manufacturing methods and activities
  • Engagement in current production activities, providing troubleshooting support to process and equipment related issues causing downtime and loss of production output
  • Utilize Lean Manufacturing tools and principles in continuous improvement projects, activities, and everyday tasks in support of Business goals related to Safety, Quality, Delivery, and Production
  • Develop and maintain process documentation
  • Active participant in Safety and Ergonomic activities in support of providing a Safe and healthy working environment for all team members
  • Assist new product development projects by supporting creation (or update) of efficient production systems that integrate workers, machines, materials, and information to manufacture product
  • Draft and design layout of equipment, materials, and workspace to illustrate maximum efficiency, using computer aided drafting software
  • Collaborate with customers (both internal and external) and suppliers (both internal and external) to understand and solve pertinent issues within area(s) of responsibility
  • Compile and execute various reports and audits, in support of ISO requirements and other initiatives within area(s) of responsibility
  • Development of equipment specifications and Statements of Work, and qualification of processes and equipment prior to deployment for production use
  • Act as a liaison with Current Product Engineering and Manufacturing Program Management team, as required to support Business objectives
  • Provide coaching and mentoring for peers
  • Act as subject matter expert on specific processes

  • Ability to apply industry standard practices and techniques in specific situations
  • Manipulate, chart, adjust and correlate data
  • Have general knowledge of tooling, fixtures, gauge design and build as well as other equipment associated with a manufacturing environment
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints as well as other associated Mercury and industry standards
  • Have a general understanding of product and material specifications
  • Work toward quality and cost goals within specific cost centers to contribute to Business goals
  • Good communication skills and can lead a cross-functional project team
  • Strong organizational skills for multi-tasking on projects
  • Have a sense of urgency and can devise new approaches to problems encountered
  • Can combine various techniques and technologies to design new systems or processes
  • Can perform work which involves conventional engineering practice but may include a variety of complex features
  • Has a thorough knowledge of flexible manufacturing systems, is knowledgeable of contemporary technology and can integrate into Mercury's manufacturing processes
  • Effective verbal/written communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work in an office, lab, and indoor industrial environment
  • Ability to make independent judgments regarding technical issues
  • Solid computer skills with MS Office, SPC Excel and other analysis tools and software programs
  • Solid presentation skills
  • Has a good working knowledge of quality systems, SPC and analysis tools as related to continuous improvement
  • Has solid capital planning capabilities and can manage multi-million-dollar projects. Proficient in budgeting, tracking and justification
  • Can implement company and departmental goals within a team structure that can span from a cost center level to plant and interplant wide scope
  • Can independently perform most assignments with instructions as to the general results expected
  • Must possess a good knowledge of process flow and development as related to machining and assembly systems
  • Good understanding and the ability to facilitate common problem solving and analysis tools such as but not limited to, PFMEA, Cause and Effect
  • Ability to train and become a certified Green Belt or Black Belt
  • Demonstrate solid background of execution
  • Perform work with minimal supervision required.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Industrial Engineering (or equivalent Engineering degree) is required
  • Minimum 7 – 10 years relevant work experience
  • Extensive working knowledge and understanding of diverse manufacturing operations
  • Proficient in lean manufacturing tools and strategies, and process improvement methodologies
  • Strong proficiency in MS Office applications
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD or equivalent 2D drafting software is desired
  • Basic understanding of cost accounting concepts, techniques, and principles
  • Ability to read and understand engineering drawings and documents

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Formal Lean Six Sigma Green / Black belt certification
  • Solid comprehension and listening skills
  • Excellent analytical and data analysis skills, careful attention to detail and accuracy
  • Self-motivated, self-directed, results-oriented, and capable of working independently within deadlines
  • Ability to maintain a high level of focus & flexibility
