Think of any large Microsoft service; Teams, Bing, Exchange, Xbox, SQL Azure, Office 365, HDInsight, COSMOS DB…. Or customers such as Accenture, Adobe, Walgreens, Walmart, Flipkart, In-Mobi and the multitude of the large/medium/small shopping, banking, finance, gaming, logistics, enterprises, data analytics/management, storage services of the world. They run on infrastructure we build. 

As platform owners for such a diversity of workloads, we need to guarantee SLAs for our customers. Service metrics like availability/reliability/performance and Infrastructure metrics like capacity/efficiency take on a new meaning at the scale we operate. Our customers want 5 9’s+ of availability, transparent maintenance & updates to their systems, resiliency of their workloads despite H/W and system failures that happen all the time in the datacentre, ability to deploy & dynamically scale large number of VMs/containers reliably. Cloud infrastructure demands efficient management of cloud resources using intelligent algorithms like oversubscription and optimal packing which build on low latency monitoring platform for resource utilization. For example, Azure Live Migration team in IDC works on a platform that creates customer impact across availability, capacity, and efficiency pillars. Ensuring the customer SLAs at scale requires us to architect and build systems across all layers of Azure Core stack (Azure Compute Manager, Azure Host OS and Host Agent, Compute Resource Provider, Azure Networking etc).

Responsibilities

In this role, you will help realize the team's mission to "Build a rock solid infrastructure for Azure Core Platform enabling it to be a trustworthy cloud for customers". Achieving this mission is critical for the success of Azure platform.  

As an example, you will play a leadership role in the definition and delivery of our roadmap of efficient server resource management when dynamic changes occur in available resources on Azure servers due to failures or changing capacity requirements. There is significant innovation in that needs to be delivered and you will lead a team to deliver multiple high impact features in this and other areas of Azure with particular focus on the Azure servers. The position requires a strong One Microsoft way of thinking in collaborating with multiple teams across geos to deliver strong results. 

You will also:  

• Bring clarity, create energy, and drive results – you’ll set a vision, rally the team behind it, and deliver for our customers.  

• Demonstrate the Microsoft manager attributes of coach, model, and care with the engineers on your team, so they all learn, grow, and succeed.  
• Plan and prioritize work for your team, including collaborating with partner organizations.  
• Create an inclusive environment that attracts and retains high-performing engineers.  
• As a part owner of the core platform, provide support for the platform and our customers by being part of the platform operations (live site) and driving improvements to systems that enable operating the fleet at scale. 

Qualifications

12+ years of experience in commercial software development.  

• 4+ years' minimum experience in a leadership position managing enterprise platform, product, or services teams  
• Demonstrated ability to incubate and grow teams and work across geos to achieve successful outcomes. 
  • BS/MS/PhD in Computer Science or equivalent industry experience  
  • Experience in building, shipping and operating reliable, distributed systems software and/or systems level software with understanding of virtualization and interactions with OS components. 
• Commitment to collaboration and teamwork and ability to deliver via influence.  
• Demonstrated problem solving and debugging skills.  

• Experience developing software hosted in Azure, AWS, or other similar Cloud platforms 
• Ability to engage in site-reliability engineering practices.
